Stock Spare Tire Mount

So a few years ago i got a beautiful Slee rear bumper with a swing away rear tire mount. Today I was looking around under the truck and decided to attack some of the rust. I removed the cross member that held the stock spair tire mount and started to think.

Do I need to put this back on?

I suppose it does add some cross bracing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

B.

I think some markets used that space for a fuel tank. The post that holds the manual winch for the tire couldn't be structural, could it? It is fairly flimsy and lightly bolted to the car. The frame crossmember is at the very rear anyway.

If you don't foresee a use for it, it's superfluous. I'm going to keep it in place for a second spare tire if desired and also to help retain the OEM sub-tank, should its mounting straps fail.

The sub tank will not fit with the winch assembly in it's stock (N American) position. There are holes in the frame to lower it but the captive nuts are not installed. The straps are more than strong enough to retain the tank, especially since the captive nuts that they bolt to are already installed. Take a look ate THIS THREAD the pictures start at post #74.

I have doubts about how well the spare tire will fit with the winch positioned to allow a sub tank. It may work with the OEM tires but the jury is still out on how well a 285/75 R-16 Toyo MTR will fit under there, it barely fits in the higher location.

You mean the piece that has the windlass for the spare?

Yes, the piece that holds the "winch" for the spair tire. It's fairly hefty.

Thanks for figuring out that I was asking about this on my 95 FZJ80. I forgot to put that in the first post.
