Mac accessory maker LaCie is introducing a rugged USB drive that sounds ideal for adventure travel. The "xtremekey" flash drive is encased in a metal cylinder strong enough to survive a truck driving over it. The case seals with a screw-on lid that has an O-ring seal watertight to a depth of 330 ft. The USB drive is rated to survive exposure to temperatures up to 400F, and as low as -60F.

As you might guess, the xtremekey is not cheap. An 8GB unit will cost about $75. Sounds exorbitant, until you consider the value of the data it could protect against loss.

:Wow1:

At that price for 8GB, I'd rather buy an 8GB SD card which would likely be just as useful (unless they're using it in 400F conditions).

Sounds good. Probably aimed more at buisness end users over recreational though.

On the same note, there are more and more tough drives coming onto the market all the time. I have been keeping my eye on the Hitachi toughdrive 500GB for our upcoming trip. going to wait a while so the £££ drop.

All you should really need is dustproof and waterproof/resistant for use in the cab.

Durable USB drives have been around for a while now, one of them I looked at in the past was called Corsair you get 16 GB for about $50

I haven't done any of the tests shown in the marketing video on other USB drives, but in general I have found them to be fairly durable. My son's school USB drive has gone through the washer and dryer many times, and it still works. That impresses me because of the water/detergent environment and the high static environment in the dryer.

Maybe I need to try sauteed USB drive!

IronKey has been making uber-tough, top-notch USB thumb drives for as long as I can remember. They're among the most secure devices as well, with the strongest built-in encryption. This is the USB drive for James Bond. The storage quantity is the only reason it ever makes it to obsolescence. They're a bit on the pricey side, though. I think I'd cry if I lost mine.

Your IronKey is an investment that will last for years. Its rugged metal casing protects against physical damage, and the internal components are sealed to protect against tampering. Also, your IronKey drive has passed and exceeded military waterproof testing requirement.

Shielded in a solid, tamper-resistant and waterproof metal casing, the IronKey drive is built to survive years of wear and tear. IronKey uses only the highest quality components, delivering 10 to 20 times the average memory lifespan of a traditional flash drive.
