Supporting a RTT?

Hello,

I am new, and I'm struggling to find information related to my suzuki samurai hard top.
All the roof racks I've seen for it are only rated for 300 pounds or less.
I'm looking for advice on how to tackle this issue. I'm unsure if I should have one custom made, or plan on adding more securing points to the vehicle for racks already made for the vehicle.
Any advise would be much welcomed.

Most roof rack ratings are for dynamic (moving) loads, and take into account the stresses an emergency stop or other sudden maneuver would produce. The static (stopped) load for a roof rack is generally much higher.

As an example, the factory roof rack on my Xterra is rated for 150 pounds. My RTT weighs around 100 pounds, so it fits within the rated dynamic capacity. I've had over 400 pounds (tent, people, and gear) up there with no issues at all when stopped at a campsite.

Thanks for sharing that information 702krawler. That helps with my understanding and to release some stress for this decision.
I guess now in just need to worry about selecting a roof rack and RTT that are compatible for mounting together.

A Sammy with a RTT scares me...and I'm fearless!:sombrero: Sure seems like a lot of weight up top and not a lot of vehicle holding it to terra firma. Just an internet opinion, take it for what it's worth.

I think there are several solutions if the Samurai becomes top heavy. Heavier Toyota axles, skid plates, oh & that 300 pound box in the back should help correct that if it is an issue. The little bit of research I've done indicates I won't have to worry much.
My Sami isn't lifted yet, and we're just trying to get ready for the overland expo east, so I'm not real concerned, but will be paying close attention so that we can make any needed adjustments before setting out on a real trip.
At the same time this is all new to me, and I appreciate anyone pointing out obvious and not so obvious issues or concerns.
