Surly Pugsley or other fat bikes- Ultimate ExPo bikes?

Hey everybody,
I just got a Pugsley for our anniversary, and I'm really loving the go-anywhere abilities of this bike. We've had some flooding of our trails here in San Antonio (all of our public green space is in flood basins,) and am really impressed at this bike's dominance over loose rocks, soft mud, neighborhood children...
Coupled with its rack mounts, I think this could be my ideal adventure bike. Anyone taken one on extended bikepacking trips!

Flounder and I know some cats in Durango who did a Stand By Me tour on Pugsleys, from Silverton back to Durango on the narrow gauge railroad tracks. Unanimously considered by the miscreants involved to be the best adventure they've ever had on bikes... and these guys have been on some serious adventures.

Pics are hard to come by due to the illegal nature of their journey.

That bike is yours?! I love that bike, I have had that picture for a while.

These bikes are big up here. The Iditasport race used to run the Iditarod Trail out to Nome starting in 1988 and ended in 2001. Now we have the Alaska UltraSport race that has two classes one 350 mile to McGrath and a 1100 Mile to Nome. You can Bike, Ski or hoof it on foot for this race. http://www.alaskaultrasport.com/alaska_ultra_home_page.html

Here are some other fat bikes that are like the surly.

From the few Pugsly owners I've spoken to who use them regularly, it's a fun rig, perhaps not the ideal rig for anything longer than a day or two with pretty low mileage per day. I really wanted that format to be the ultimate adventure bike, but every time I asked a current owner what they thought of using it to cover several hundreds of mile with a light load, the usual reply was a grimace and a slight shrug of the shoulders. However, those who have them love them for snow, sand and all around off-road nuttiness. They scream fun, don't they?

1st I've seen of them (new to riding). Don't know how I would feel about riding one, but I would look "cool" with one hanging off the back of my 4Runner while pumping gas, gazing into the distance.:bike_rider:

Surly's Big Dummy frame

I don't know much about the Pug, but if it made by Surly it's got to be well built!

I've always thought Surly's Big Dummy frame is a great platform for an expo bike. :bike_rider:
