Autoblog reports that Suzuki is actively working on a plan to bring the next generation Jimny (formerly Samurai) to USA. Yes, Please!!!

Here's what the current Jimny looks like

And here is Suzuki's X-Head concept from a couple of years ago.

I've read a lot about it. I sincerely hope they do bring a Jimny-based pickup here. We could really use a compact pickup again, IMHO. My only caveats:

- Manual trans available
- Low range t-case offered
- At least a solid rear axle
- Keep it compact and efficient

FYI, I wrote a post about this on my personal blog, Subcompact Culture, yesterday: The case for the compact pickup.

As a Suzuki fan, I really hope they bring it. I'd love to add one to my stable.

About 7 years ago, I owned two Samarai's. If the Jimny comes to the US with a two speed transfer case, I'll be looking into one. Solid axles and diesel would be a great plus. However, if it carries a $25K price tag, I'll continue with my current ride.

I, too long for a compact fuel efficient, no frills pick up. I have owned two Nissan Frontiers over the last 12 years . The latest is an 03. It currently has about 140,000 miles on it. 4 cylinder, 5 speed with air. I'd love to have a regular cab, 4wd, 4 cylinder, 5 speed with a/c. I think Toyota is the only company that makes one, but prices are outrageous. Most of the new trucks are too heavy to acheive decent mileage.

Remember Toyota's small pickup concept, the A-Bat? It was like a 1/2 scale Honda Ridgeline, and built on a unibody chassis.

Let's hope Suzuki is thinking about a practical small truck, rather than a lifestyle statement. I don't think Suzuki has enough excess cash to build a new vehicle just for USA, so I'd guess this model will be offered in several markets worldwide.

Suzuki sold its Canadian manufacturing facility to GM a couple of years ago, so it's unclear where Suzuki might assemble the small pickup in North America to avoid the 25% import tax that is still charged on trucks.

As much as I am with you guys on this one - I doubt it will ever happen.

We get excited about this stuff, but you have to remember - we're the lunatic fringe.

Pickups in the good old U. S. of A. are not bought by us. They are bought by Bubba to haul a case of Bud Light back from the Quiky Mart. The major consideration being the availability of real estate on it for NASCAR stickers.

So - forget the diesel, and the low range, and the 5 speed.

I'm not going to wait around for it. My tintop is disintegrating around me and I'm on the hunt for another! :wings:

But - I'd love it if I was wrong.

Cheers,
Mark

As a lucky ex-pat living in Serbia I'm actually driving the current Jimny everyday. I can tell you that if they stick with it at all(which I believe this would as changing it would kill their sells outside the US where they are all over) that it would have solid axles, be very spartan and very cheap. Mines a 2009 and didn't even come with AC, power steering or a stereo. As a warning though it rides about as good as an old willys did stock, it's just a no BS little 4x4 that is impossible to kill lol.

You guys need to perk up about the new Diesels.. They are coming to the US soon.. Just wait till the next Nissan Titan comes with one..
I really expect to see it soon.. The MPG and the push in the US for more MPG.. will make this happen soon. Now it will have to be a clean diesel.

Some one with nothing to loose will bring one to the US
