Tacoma Option Packages

You guys have just about done it. I'm seriously thinking of taking my first swig of Tacoma Cool-Aid. Toyota's option packages give me a headache. The local dealer has several crew cab 08s with various option packages - TRD Off Road, TRD Sport Package 2, etc. If you were to buy an '08 Tacoma for use primarily as daily driver in Wyoming (think cold and snow), some bombing around Red Desert two track roads, the occasional trip to Moab for some moderate trail running, pulling a couple of quads, etc., which option package would you select? P.S. - I'm mechanically retarded so my "modding" would be fairly limited. A bumper would be cool, how 'bout some lights, maybe a winch...

So it starts. Thanks. Ed

If doing a lot of modding is not in your future then I would say the TRD Off Road Package would be best since it comes with an E-Locker. I bought my Non-TRD due to the fact that I knew I would be doing a lot of stuff to it and if I had gotten the TRD most of the stuff on it would have been gone by now anyways.

Also since you are in snow region I would switch the tires by Winter. Those Rugged Trails that come with the Tacomas are just not the best tires in the world.

Other then that the TRD OFF ROAD is a great out of the box truck. When you get the truck I would check out peoples build threads and see what they have done and go about your own mods from there. Believe me when say that even though I am not mechanically inclined with enough time and patience I have been able to make leaps and bounds in my understanding of working on my own truck. I have payed no one to work on my truck yet.

Oh make sure you get the Tow Package. You will have a better battery and a better alternator also which will come in handy if you upgrade batteries or put in a dual battery set-up which is on my current list of mods to complete by August.

If you get a TRD OFF-ROAD then I would not bother with the "Rugged Trail" version. IMO it is just a waste of money and adds nothing, but "Off-Road" street bling to the price. But that is just how I feel, that's all up to you.

Here are the two versions from the Toyota website.

"TRD Off-Road Package (OC) - SR5 Package #2 plus off-road-tuned suspension with Bilstein® shocks, 16-in. alloy wheels with P265/70R16 BFGoodrich® Rugged Trail T/A tires, locking rear differential, engine skid plate and fuel tank protector, front tow hook, 115V/400-watt deck-mounted power outlet, multi-function overhead console with compass and temperature gauge, sport seats with sport fabric and driver's lumbar support, and TRD Off-Road graphics (V6 models)"

"TRD Rugged Trail Off-Road Package (SF) - TRD Off-Road Package Plus 16" black Baja alloy wheels with P265/70R16 BFGoodrich® Rugged Trail T/A tires, black off-road overfenders, unique TRD Off-Road graphics, accessory front skid plate and unique all-weather floor mats"

I agree with Streakerfrek -- get the TRD Off-Road w/ e-locker, and in a crew cab, if this will be your daily. I believe there is also an option in our region that allows you to get the TRD OR with ATRAC. See if any of those trucks come with the ATRAC.

+3 - TRD Off Road package with locker. With Sport and Off Road, you get most of the same interior features, and nice firm seats that are very comfy for long days in the truck. Sport gets color-matched body and LSD rear end. OR gets black and chrome bumpers/mirrors, and the locker. The suspensions are maybe slightly different in their tuning, but only the most discriminating driver would notice.

Even if you never use the locker, it will be a very nice resale feature for someone looking to build a used truck.

FWIW, I know you don't want to mod it much, but I just bought a new '08 access cab with the 4 cyl motor and a 5 spd. By the time I had the dealership add an ARB bumper and rear locker, Warn winch and OME lift kit and a set of BFG AT's it was on par with the TRD Offroad package. My main reason for going this route was mileage. I have a 25 mile one way daily commute and I am getting an honest 20.6 mpg with only 2,100 miles on the truck. I'm hoping to top out at about 22mpg.
