Greetings from South Africa.
I am looking at building up an expedition camping / hunting / fishing truck and are currently looking at my options and looking for ideas:
I have looked at:
• The Isuzu NPS 300 with a crew cab
• The TATA LPTA 713
• The UNIMOG, out of my budget unless it is an ex military vehicle.
• SAMEL 20 (refurbished ex military)
• SAMEL 50 (refurbished ex military)
The Isuzu is very nice, and affordable (costs less than a double cab 4x4 pick-up!) but the standard wheels look too small and it will also need bash plates, etc, etc.
The SAMEL'S are very capable, were and are used by the South African Defence Force, but these are old vehicles with an unknown history and I worry about spares etc into the future.
Has anybody had any experience with the TATA 4X4 trucks? If so is this an option worth pursuing?
There are very few guys doing expedition trucks in South Africa that I know of so advice is “thin on the ground” and as this is going to be a DIY project most of the way other than identifying specialists for some of the project that I am unable to do and I don’t want to waste money unnecessarily.
Thank you for your advice and comments.
