Teach me about the 5th gen 4R TE

So maybe I don't know how to use google well enough, but I've searched for days now on various forums and can't find answers to my questions:

Are there different versions of the '10-'13 TE? I went to look at one the other day and, while it had the part-time transfer case and was called a Trail Edition, it did not have a rear locker or any of the off-road gizmos. Was the rear locker an option on the TE or is the true TE just the one with the hood scoop and the different wheels?

Also, in looking at used 5th Gens, what should I look for as general problematic areas? Were there any common defects or failure points that I should watch out for? Are particular model years better than others?

Thanks!

About 99% sure all TE's come with locking rear diff. Part-time transfer case and no rear locker = SR5. TE also has all the crawl control stuff (off-road gizmos) mounted on the ceiling in front of the homelink. I'm not aware of one year fixing an issue from a previous year in the 2010 - 2013 range. I drove a 2010 Limited and now have a 2015 TRD Pro. Both are great vehicles. Good luck!

All TE's come with a locker and traction control like Volfan says.

They sure do have a premium price tag on them. Most used ones with 50k miles are selling for 30-35! Ridiculous!

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. I guess many dealers are selling SR5s as Trail Editions then.

And yes you are right SD, they seem to hardly depreciate. That's why I've got an appointment to go drive a '15 TE Premium this afternoon. If I'm going to spend north of $30K, it's going to be for a new truck.

Volfan, how do you like your TRD Pro compared to your Limited?

Exactly. Not much changed from the 5th to 5th 1/2 gen. Only difference is really the front bumper and the rims. And good call, no reason to buy a used one like I stated above when you can get a brand new one for a few thousand more. I test drove a 5th gen and a 5th 1/2 gen because I've wanted a new vehicle but I cant pull the trigger. I like having power and hearing the engine roar when you step on the gas and the V6 in the T4R just doesn't do it for me.

I love it. Rides a bit more truck-like than the LE. Both are more than capable for my needs but I liked the look of the Pro and figure it will hold its value even better.
