I paid $24 for this little (12" x 13") firepit:
The brand is Fltom, also sold under other names, like Campingmoon.
It's out of stock right now on Amazon, but there's this larger one (13" x 19") for $62:
I tested the small one on a camping trip this week and really liked it. The evenings and mornings were quite cold for August (45 degrees) and this little firepit put out very useful heat as well as light and ambiance. What impressed me the most was how little wood it burned over two hours. A small cardboard box (about 2 cu ft) of hardwood lasted for two fires (total 4 hours).
The wood does need to be cut quite short and split small. I cut up a box of wood from odds and ends in my wood pile at home. All dry hardwood. Lit it with a bit of newspaper and my favorite, Diamond Strike-a-Fire sticks (1/3 or 1/2 a stick is all you need). Within one minute I had a good fire going. I'm not a great outdoor cook, but I made a good toasted cheese sandwich for breakfast.
I previously had a UCO Flatpack firepit but it had one big flaw: the wood tended to all fall to the bottom of the V and block the air flow. The Fltom, being square, avoids that problem entirely such that the wood can easily be stacked crisscross for more air. It burns much better than the UCO Flatpack. All the wood burned completely, leaving only about 1 cup of ashes.
The Fltom came in a steel case plus a fabric bag. All the pieces fit easily in the case and bag. (The UCO is near impossible to fit back in the canvas bag.) The metal case can be placed under the firepit to catch the ashes.
Very happy with this purchase, but others might find the 13" x 19" more useful.
