So when I was at the Allrad show in Germany a couple weeks ago, there were discussions about how this model/powertrain combo could be the best one to get:

-24V Turbo Diesel
-Manual
-Factory Lockers

Nice vehicle (1996 was near the end of the run for the HDJ81). 1997 there was a Collector's edition - few extra trim not necessarily a better expedition vehicle. 4.2L Turbo = engine that will last for a long time...

I think the best 80series you can get is a 1993 or 1994 HDJ80 with 12V Turbo Diesel (more reliable), manual gearbox, factory lockers, no airbags and LHD.

Like the one I have :D , except that mine is with automatic gearbox...

Whichever one sits in your garage, right?
I'm only saying that because I can't easily have a HDJ in the U.S.
I like my 94 locked FZJ. If I were planning on round the world trip. I would surely move somewhere to acquire and build the 12v Td locked and manual model, pop top roof too.
They are all good if you ask me:)
