The Bill of Rights for Photography Competitions

Not all of us are professionals making a living with our shots, but many of us are amatures who will enter contests from time to time just like pros. Pro Imaging is a great website that has a couple of campaigns that need support at the moment. One of the campaigns is a so called Bill of Rights campaign aimed at creating fairness in photo competitions. There is a list of photo competitions that are fair to participants and a much longer list of contests that are not.

Having entered a number of photo contests myself I know how sly and thick some of the legal jargon can get. You may just be looking for recognition of your work or a small prize but before you know it you've given away intellectual property rights to your photo. So be careful with contests and help support this campaign.

That is very true.

Some companies will run a photo contest, for the sole purpose of aquiring useful images at no cost. They will then use those images in their marketing or for calendars, giving the photographer no credit or compensation.
