What’s the response time for the battery protection to trigger? I’m running off a power bank, and I think there may be a voltage drop during the compressor’s start up surge and the cooler shuts down before the voltage comes back up to the normal running level.One of the more complicated questions we get is relative to how our battery protection system works.
When does it know to shut off the cooler before you get to a no start situation (if you are using a single battery for your vehicle)? Even if you are using a secondary battery the same question applies except it removes the no start situation.
If you are using a single battery (starter battery) we recommend that you start out with our battery protection set to HIGH initially (and perhaps MEDIUM after you've done some testing to see how it works with your vehicle).
Here's why....
Symptom
- Voltage is sensed at the CFX DC socket and not at the terminals on the batteries. Many people don't realize just how much voltage loss occurs with thin gauge wire, poor electrical connectors, and old wiring. For example, a member of our team has a '87 FJ60. When trying to using the 12V socket in the dash, there is such a terrible loss that it won't power a CFX regardless of battery protection setting.
- When current is pulled through a wire, the voltage drops by default, which causes more loss (Pukert's law).
All the above can cause the battery protection to activate since the cooler isn't getting the power it needs - regardless of the reason. This also protects the cooler components.
Solution
If you have problems powering your cooler with your existing wiring pick up one of our DC Hardwire Kits. 10AWG direct from your battery to a socket for your cooler.
If you use a dual battery set up (in vehicle or one of our PLB40s) set battery protection to LOW.
Below is information showing at what points the battery protection for the CFX3 will kick in and shut the cooler down as well as in what range it will happily run.

Same here. We have a PLB-40 that stopped charging via 12V and it was past the warranty period. Customer service was pretty awful and didn’t offer any help even though we were willing to buy a new one (product is no longer supported). As far as I’m concerned Dometic is an Instagram brand and we’ve given up and began using National Luna and more premium products.In the past 9 months One of my Dometic Fridges has an issue where it won't turn off, and the fridge has had less than 3 or 4 months total runtime,
And Two days ago One of my Dometic PLB40 Power Station's has decided it won't charge after 10 or 12 uses It won't reset and the screen says it is too hot when it is NOT @ 15/16*c and Dometic No longer Repairs or fixes the PLB40's so now I have around $1300.00/$1500.00 of Products that Don't Work,
As both of these Items were bought in December 2019 and January 2020 the warranty is no longer covered.
As I bought 2 Dometic Fridges and 2 Dometic PLB40 Power Stations I am now waiting for the Others to Crash. One Fridge still works because it is still Boxed and I bought it about 2021/2022, But the 2nd PLB40 I bought at the same time that I bought the One that has failed. So my expectations from Dometic in terms of longlivity are right on the Edge.
I never thought I would be having Issues with the Products I bought from Dometic, But so far I Got a 50% failure rate, 4 Products 2 Dead.
Good luck to anyone who has a product with Issues in getting it fixed or resolved.![]()
I will certainly never buy another Dometic fridge if they cannot support the app at all.
