The Mothership

Hello everyone. I've been reading/lurking for a bit now - but have finally taken the plunge.

My wife is an Endurance Sports coach and ultra trail runner - and we've been looking for an adventure vehicle she can take on her excursions, or something our little famliy can crash in when we go camping/exploring together. We definitely wanted 4wd/AWD to get us out on forest service roads, so we considered a truck/camper - but thought a van would be more manageable and less expensive. So we ended up searching for an Express/Savana AWD. We test drove a pile of used ones, and even considered flying half way across the country for one - but ended up finding one right here near home (Seattle area) that met most of our criteria.

So here it is - the Mothership.

The Van-06551.jpg

It's a 2011 GMC Savana AWD. It came to us with the people pusher on the front, and with the off road tires. The tires are new, but it appears the brush guard has been on there for quite some time. We can't figure out if it was previously some sort of police van or what. It's got super high miles, clearly a fleet vehicle - but was really well taken care of.

It's a standard 8 passenger van. The plan is to leave the second row in there - for the daughter - and build a platform for a queen bed in the back. It'll be high enough off the floor to get a dog crate under there for the pups. We'll do drawers, curtains, lights, backup camera, probably a roof rack of some sort- but nothing too nuts like kitchen or heater or toilet. Then we are going to use the hell out of it and see what else we need and go from there.

Wish me luck. And thanks in advance for answering what is sure to be a ton of dumb questions.

With off road tires, that bumper and high miles, it was probably used for personnel transport for the oil or mining industry.

Yeah, I think there's a good chance it was some sort of personnel transportation vehicle. It's got 230k miles on it and it's a 2011. There aren't too many ways to get that many miles in that short a time other than some seriously long trips.. I don't think it had the off road tires in its previous life though - the seller put them on.

I've got my plans laid out and took a ton of measurements. Tomorrow I start buying wood for the bed platform, and the drawer slides arrive next week. I'm excited to get going.

It's an Ali Arc bumper, and it is aluminum (according to the website). Sure looks it too in person.

So, I've started doing some work on getting it ready. I decided that I wanted the platform for the bed to be modular - so that I could put the third row back in if I needed the passenger space. So I designed it so that the front part of the platform can lift and slide back over the back part, giving enough room to put the third row back.

I also needed the platform to be high enough up to fit our dog's travel crate under there. She always travels in a crate because we think it's safer for her.

So here are the pics so far. I've got the platform in... and I've installed drawer slides - but I haven't yet built the drawers.

Very nice, what kind of slides did you use? It's very similar to the setup I have in my van, except I made my own rails, which is working with mixed results hahaha. I like how you kept it modular as well, very handy. What are you using for a mattress?

I'm using these slides... as they were recommended elsewhere on this forum.

http://www.tchweb.com/tchstore/prod...0-lbs-Full-Extension-Drawer-Slide--Pair-.html

They were quite inexpensive, but sure do seem solid. I haven't yet built the drawers so I can't tell you how well they work. They glide nicely out of the box - but I'll reserve judgement til I'm done. On the right side of the platform I will have one deep drawer. On the left side I will have one half height drawer with room underneath for a simple underbed bin. We wanted one plastic bin back there for throwing wet stuff til we can hang it...

I bought an IKEA foam mattress (I've used these in other trucks). It will pretty much fit as is (Queen Size) - although I will have to trim down one corner. I just got the mattress and hope to trim it tomorrow or Wednesday. I suspect that won't be too big a deal. (famous last words)

Next up is curtains. Anyone got any brilliant yet easy ways to hang curtains in a van like this?

Thanks!

Tom

I apologize if this is a duplicate reply.... I treid replying a few days ago and it didn't seem to post.

I used these rails... http://www.tchweb.com/tchstore/prod...0-lbs-Full-Extension-Drawer-Slide--Pair-.html

They were recommended by others on the site and seem pretty damn sturdy - especially for the price. Now I haven't finished the drawers yet, so I can't say for sure how well they work. I'll have one large drawer on the right side, and on the left side will be one half height drawer with a plastic bin underneath for wet stuff.

Next up is curtains - anyone have any great ideas how to hang curtains in one of these rigs?

Tom

I'm using an Ikea foam mattress. They are cheap and work well - and have a zip off cover for washing. I may need to trim one corner - but a queen fits very nicely in the back.

OK, I've tried replying twice - and niether posted... I'm just learning that I can't post links yet... so, sorry this took so long to get back to you.

I'm using 36" 250# drawer slides from tchweb that were recommended elsewhere in this forum - I'd send a link but I can't. So far they seem good and sturdy - although I haven't built my drawers yet, so we'll see. They were really inexpensive for what appears to be high quality stuff.

I'm building one big drawer on the right, and one smaller drawer on the left with room for a plastic storage bin under the left drawer. That way we have a spot to throw wet stuff if we need it.

As for a mattress I'm using an IKEA foam mattress... they are inexpensive and have a removable cover that's washable. I've used them in previous rigs too, pretty great for the price.

My next step after drawers is curtains - any great ideas out there for hanging curtains in a Savana/Express passenger van?

As far as curtains I have seen individuals on here mount small magnets under the trim around the windows. They have then sewn corresponding magnets into the curtain.
