Thinking on an '08 Xterra

So, my wife's starter is going out on her '94 4Runner.

The 4Runner is in excellent condition for almost 15years of use. It's got 180k on the odo, and has been babied it's whole life.

Either the battery is dying or the starter is going out. I haven't put a huge amount into it either, but we did buy it in a pinch and ended up paying mroe than I really wanted to. That said, it's been a damn fine auto for her and the kid/dog.

We have a new one on the way, 12-2 due date. That's the worst time of the year for us as far as weather, and so I require a 4WD for her in case she needs to get out of the area.

We've decided on the X a while ago as what we're going to get into for her next rig. The safety factor is huge w/ two kids and her in 1 vehicle, and the Xterra is heads and tails over the aging 4Runner. Not to mention the parts commonality between my Fronty and her X, so I would only have to stock one type. :)

I guess the '09s are hitting the lots in limited numbers here and there, but I actually like the looks/setup of the '08s better. This leads me to think I may be able to get a dealer to drop pricing a bit with them wanting to get rid of a gas-guzzling rig to make room for the '09s. That idea flawed?

So we're going to throw a bunch of cash into her X like we did my Fronty and make it off-road worthy. Which trim/package should I be looking at for the most capable rig?

Oh, and our rigs are goign to be twins, Super Black, AT, Tow, 4x4. Is the Offroad worth the extra $$$? I'd like to keep it below $26k.

LMK, we just got approved in financing for $37k, so it may be soon that we purchase. (Oh, and there's no way we're paying any more than we have to, so while we can AFFORD the extras, I'm only buying what we need/will use.)

Get in there now for a Xterra. I was on a trip and a friend's co-worker got a new Xterra for $16K. Yes, $16K! They are blowing them out.

at that price, I would be all over it.

Might as well check the Toyota 4Runner if you are looking for safety- it is the best rated and def. a step above the Xterra for a mid-size suv. Linked coil suspension, long travel ifs, atrac/dac/hac/5spd tranny, highest crash ratings in class, made in tahara jpn...
I think Toyota has some deep rebates right now too.

The Xterra Offroad is the same as the Nismo Frontier. If you are going to be putting a decent amount of money into it ( skids, wheels, etc...). You are ending up replacing most of the differences. It all then just boils down to the locker. If you feel the extra cash for a locker is worth it, then go for it. I myself have found it to be worth having. It works wonders in keeping myself from getting stuck in deep snow.

Just got off the phone w/ Bremerton Nissan internet guy.

They DO have one for $19 OTD, but it's a 2WD cheapie.

I told him exactly what I want, he quoted me $22,422 OTD. Then recommended I go down the road for a hitch/wiring and save some cash.

I don't trust the newer Toyotas as far as reliability in teh drivetrain. I know too many personal friends (3) who've had more issues wtih their new (two '05s and 1 '07) toyotas than I've had with my Fronty.

Yeah, I plan on replacing most of what the package gives anyway. Though the locker doesn't seem worth the extra $$$ right now. And in the future I could always add one in.

Keep in mind that the ARB locker is for the M226 rear diff.
