Tire chains on 100 series

I have read that there is not enough clearance for chains on the front. Does anyone have experience with this? I have snow tires so I'm not incredibly worried but it still would be nice to have a set of chains in the car. Any particular brand/style people like?

Have you checked for an answer over on IH8MUD in the 100 series section? May find an answer there too.

On the type of chain - real ones, not the cheap cable type. I've carried the chain type in my 80 for years and have never had to put them on outside a test fit when I got them. I've had many checkpoints here in CA ask if I've got them in the truck and let through w/o putting them on being 4WD. I've had two checkpoints close behind me on I-80 up to Tahoe due to blizzard conditions. I was running the stock Michelin LTX tires at the time, so not even snow tires. The Landcruiser did exceptionally well.

I looked on mud and couldn't find anything for stock suspension. I agree it's been great before in snow and I want the chains just for piece of mind. I was thinking only get one pair, for the rear, and avoid all fit issues.

I just ordered up ZT835 chains for my BFG AT KO2's 275/70R18. Doubt I'll ever need them but just want to have something to show any checkpoint that asks. Did research but didn't see anything about clearance issues. Running stock suspension.

The answer is yes, there is not room in the front to run tire chains.......usually. We tried on my BIL's LX a couple weeks ago. He is running OEM 18" wheels and 295's. There is not enough room between the tire and the top of the spindle/upper control arm. He was able to run them on the back tires just fine. He is planning to add a set of 1.25" wheel spacers which should give enough room for the chains.

I think that you will find that chains on the back with some weight in the bed will get you a lot of places. Sure having them on the front lets the weight of the motor do some of the work as well as helping with steering. However they work nicely on the back. A company I used to work for had a fleet of tundras. we ran them chained up off road in the high desert oil field of utah all winter. 2 feet of snow was no uncommon. Plowing didnt exist. we made it most places just fine.
I carry a set for the Back of my tacoma after working that winter and they have never made it on the truck other then just playing around with test fitment. I ended up getting a gnarly pair of the heavy duty Vbar type chains. These things are awesome in the snow. Not sure they are legal in all places on road but the way I look at it is that if I have to use them to come off a montain pass or what not im not messing around.
Honnestly if on road and I have to chain in my tacoma ( with 4x4 and studded tires) I most likely should not be on the road to start with.

Front is tight for chains but depends on tire width. 285/75/16 = too tight. 255/85/16 = not too tight.
