Tired Tacoma speakers.

Hey all!

I have had my Taco for close to a month now and am loving it! It is a big change from the Rubicon I had before, in a good way. I love the power doors and locks, the extra space, and the ride is infinitely better on pavement. I'm know I am going to miss driving with the doors off when nicer weather comes, but I could always buy another motorcycle:D .

One of the few things that need to be remedied is the factory stereo. I am not an audiophile by any means but the speakers really seem to be anemic. The sound was better in my wrangler with the soft top on cruising down the highway at 65. Has anyone here swapped out the factory speakers and factory radio? I'm not a big fan of the way most aftermarket head units look (like a miniature disco in the cab) but if I replace the speakers I should probably replace the head unit to power them better. I don't know much about aftermarket speakers so I was wondering if anyone has thought the same as I do and found some better replacements. I know this isn't real high on the expedition priority list (for some) but I spend so much time in my truck I would like to improve the sound.

I should probably add that I have a 2002 Tacoma TRD double cab.

Cheers,
Josh

I bought a set of Alpine 6-1/2" speakers for my front doors and Boston Acoustic 5-1/4" for the rear doors. I paid $200 for all 4 speakers. It was a huge improvement over the stock speakers. If you can afford to upgrade the headunit at the same point, take a look at Alpine. I paid $179 for mine and it has MP3/WMA capabilities and I-Pod hookup.

Did you get the speakers locally? Are the 6.5's drop in or did you have to do some shoehorning to get them in? I would like to upgrade my door speakers pretty soon.

The problem is more then the speakers

Walmart.
Sony stereo CDX-GT52W with wireless remote control and Aux input for MP3 player on the front. $140 (just put this in to replace a blown up 8 year old Sony...LOVE it!)
Sony speakers $60-150 depending on size.

If you want a little extra bass then get the Powered Bazooka Subwoofer $130

I have this set up in two trucks and VERY happy with the sound. Thought the remote was stupid when I got them but its nice to set in in the cup holder within easy reach.

Crutchfield is the way to go. They have some good deals, but the best thing is all of the headunits and speakers all come with harnesses. It's all just plug and play. Their customer service is also top notch.

EDIT: Also forgot to note, they will also send you pictured install instructions for your specific vehicle. Very handy.

Another note on crutchfield. If for any reason you have a problem with what you bought from them you can call the tech support line and they will be more than glad to help you. No matter if it's 1 year or 5 years later. A+ company.

I bought them from Crutchfield along with the headunit. Crutchfield offers free shipping on orders over $100 and they give awesome instructions. The speakers were drop in and very easy to do.

Sorry to barge in, but is there anyone with knowledge about purchasing a head unit with Sirius/ other sat radio AND mp3 AND whatever else I'm missing? Preferably single DIN to fit a Ham in the other bay? (And doesn't resemble a disco...great analogy!)

About the Sat radio...how soon would a head unit be obsolete in this (AFAIK) changing market?

X3 or whatever on Crutchfield...it seems like forever ago when I upgraded an auto stereo, but they were great to work with even then.
