TIRES - On Original 16” Wheels on M416-M100-M101CDN Trailers

What size, brand, and model tires are you running on your 1/4 Ton trailers on the ORIGINAL-STOCK 16" wheels? Any issues? Rubbing when heavily loaded? Bias with tubes, radials, radials with tubes? I would like to go with a tall skinny radial with an all-terrain or AT/MT Crossover tread pattern. Please post pics with your info!

Here is some approximate size info I have compiled:

OEM M416 Wheels are 16 X 4.5 with 5 X 5.5 lug pattern
215 85 R16. 30.4 X 8.5
7.00-16. 30.5 X 8.?
225 85 R16. 31.1 X 8.9
235 85 R16. 31.7 X 9.3
7.50-16. 31.8 X 8.4
225 90 R16 31.9 x 8.9
225 95 R16 32.8 x 8.9

Is everyone swapping wheels on these trailers?

Mine will be pulled by four or five different vehicles, so changing wheels to match the tow rig is impossible.

I’m leaning hard toward finding a radial 7.50-16. Tall and skinny like I wish I was...

Why not run original type NDT Military type tires? My 416 came with I'm pretty sure the original military NDT's with tubes, and other than some serious dry rot, they hold air and pull perfectly. I did purchase some original M100 wheels that had brand new 6x16 tires, locally for $100, I still need to balance them, but they are brand new. I figure if the original tires lasted 40+ years, why fix it if it ain't broke.
 
The 7.00 16 NDTs are definitely an option. I want to explore a radial tire - no tubes option for safety at highway speeds of 70-79 mph. I have read and seen evidence that bias ply tires with tubes heat-up and fail at those speeds.

I run the stock wheels with an a radial tire. I thought about keeping the tubed tire, but my fear was no way to be able to repair a tubed tire on the trail. I'm sure the chances are small but it was enough for me to go with a radial that a can plug if needed.
 
I sold my M101cdn last year, but I ran 235/85r16 Goodyear mt/r tires on it.
Suspension was raised, but axle and wheels were original to the trailer.
Looked good, fit under the OG fenders.

235/85/16 is a common size if you had to get a replacement off the beaten path. Just something to think about.
 
I run BFG Commercial T/A Traction tires in size 215/85R16 on my vintage pickup. The original wheels have been powder coated and aside from needing larger valve stems for the inner tube holes, work great. They have the look of an old school tall/skinny bias mud tire but are modern and easily available. The Firestone commercial mud tires look right as well. I like tall and skinny on trailers - good clearance but lower weight and don't need custom over width fenders.
 
Decision has been made and wheels dropped off. 235 85 R16 Uniroyal Laredo HD/T is the winner. Specs say they measure 31.6” tall and 9.4” wide when mounted on 6.5” wide wheels. It will be interesting to see how they measure out on the M416 4.5” wheel.

Big thanks to Chris at 49 Tire Pros (& Cruisers). Pics on wheel to follow in a few days. Trailer is still under construction. I drove poor Chris (@Wct49) nuts looking for an old school look with smooth sidewall and chunky tread in a radial. Every tire I liked was discontinued. Chris found and recommended the Uniroyals.527850

Happy to discover that Uniroyal is made by Michelin. The Laredo HD/T is a commercial heavy duty tire. I will never wear them out. Pics

How did your tires hold up? I'm getting 215/85/16 Falken Wildpeak AT3W mounted on my original M416 wheels tomorrow. I was nervous about the 215's mounted on the 4.5 inch rim, how are people mounting 235's? Those tires are meant for 6.5 inch rims and wider.

How are your LT tires off road?

I changed out the wheels to Jeep wheels and used regular tires 32 11.50 15 tires. These tires aired down very well and eliminated the bounce the LT and HD tires have even when aired down.
