This isn't Fireside Chat and politics don't belong. But writing from north of the border, I'm hoping people down south understand the tariffs are not imposed by or paid by exporters; Canadian, Mexican or otherwise. Is an American tax collected from American importers on the American side of the border and goes to the American government. Just consider it a new consumption tax ;-)

Im all for supporting US companies and rebuilding US manufacturing. But this “experiment” in mercantilist protectionism and picking trade fights with our closest allies will not end well for us.

In meantime US customers might consider TC builders north of border. At least until the dollar crashes.

This is exactly what I did. Saved me the first tariff imposed by Trump 1.0 and allowed me to take advantage of the favorable exchange rate. However, my understanding is that buying from Canadian builders as a US buyer may avoid tariffs on Chinese products but not Canadian ones anymore.

if one were to cross into canada with an empty bed and return with a mounted camper, who would be the wiser? Asking hypothetically, of course!
I built a camper in Canada many years ago, and they wanted to know all about it when I crossed into the US. No tariffs then, though.

They surely have photos and videos of when you went north, so it would be simple to check. I don't see how it would be any different than loading up all sorts of stuff to avoid tariffs. Smuggling.

you may be right. We’ve lived a long time under the luxury and freedom of welcoming borders to the north. Seems that is likely to change if these tariffs are to be enforced. Heavily policed borders to the north and south foretell a grim future. Especially for those of us who appreciate wheeled travel, our world may be getting a lot smaller.

Oh they weren't welcoming to me at all when going north! My beat up rig and long hair and beard must have gotten me profiled. Me and my GF sat for hours while they picked over it with a fine tooth comb. Seriously... they were doing detailed inspections of the dirt in the carpet. I started get worried thinking about the random people and hitchhikers I'd given rides to.

They were polite though, and didn't find anything. I got a similar inspection coming back from Baja.

I haven't tried to cross a border lately, but I've noticed that Border Patrol never bothers to stop me and look inside my rig. Just seems curious considering how they can't see inside at all unless I open it, and I could be hauling a big load of illegals or contraband.

I had many friendly conversations with border agents on both sides. Most of them are just curious about the vehicle itself. Aside from all of that, both countries have pretty clear rules when it comes to invasive species, vaccines for your pet etc. One of the officers told me that it's not uncommon for 4x4, RV's to be denied entry if they are contaminated with soil/mud/dirt etc.
