Towing with an FG

I'm considering purchase of a cruising sailboat on a trailer. Total weight around 8000 lbs. Trailer has surge brakes. Is it reasonable to think a 99Fg would tow it? I wouldn't tow it often but when I did, I might tow it quite a distance. My FG with camper currently weighs around 11500lbs. I'm trying to figure out if I'd need a separate towing vehicle if I got the sailboat. Don't really care about top speed when towing beside the fact that it should be able to do 55mph. Any experience and opinions out there?

if my maths doesnt fail me 8000lb is a tad over 3.5tonne
your FG will do that without raising a sweat
i would pay some attention to the hitch though
the Hayman Reese hitch reciever on my canter is rated to 4500Kg
the hitch itself is only 3500Kg to go bigger than 3.5T id have to go to a pintle hook or 75mm ball
just some food for thought

Food for thought: the GCWR on a new FG is a 21765 lbs. You should find the number for yours in the manual. Hills wouldn't be fun, but top speed on level ground should be fine.

I towed about 6,000# down the Oregon Coast, through the Redwoods, over to Las Vegas and back up through Western Idaho with hardly being aware of the extra load and I weigh 12,000 with the camper. The FE does have better brakes and a bit more HP.
