I have 2 new and 2 used Scepter gas cans, I need 2 Scepter Diesel cans - if you have a pair you are no longer using I'll trade new for new, or used for used - just let me know what you have & where they're going

Is there something speacial about the Diesel over the Gas? I thought they were the same can but with different colored straps on the lids.

FWIW I always understood this to be true: All MFC Fuel Cans are designed to accommodate either Gasoline or Diesel Fuel. However DOT Regulations require that a Red Strap be placed on Gasoline cans and Yellow Strap be placed on Diesel cans.

Ship the straps and seals----same gas tank just diferent materials in the seals

I even think the gas one will work with diesel but not the other way around...

Diesel is basicly just a light oil and dosn't eat rubbers where as normal gasoline does

Riverside is very close, wouldnt be a big deal to meet up with a fellow EP member personally for the swap!

Did you ever make the trade? I just acquired two used USMC cans that had diesel in them. One is in pretty decent shape. The other one has been banged up more but the lid screws down fine. I'll get some pictures today.

Mine turned out to be diesel cans when I opened the box even though I ordered gas cans - I should have checked before posting this up, sorry!

I actually read the previous post but it lacked any facts to help me determine the difference when examining the two cans that I have. That is why I posed my question. The only thing I do know is that the Marines put diesel fuel in these cans. It is possible that they were gasoline cans because at this point it is hard to tell.

The Scepter site says a diesel gasket is "standard" and that the gasoline gasket is Viton. But the Scepter catalog numbers do not match what is on the two cans that I have. They list NSN numbers but not those numbers that are molded on the cans. These two cans have olive drab straps on the lids, not yellow. On my other cans that have red straps there is a letter "P" molded in for designating Petrol.

If I eyeball a gasket on one of my Scepter gas cans the gasket looks about the same. Maybe I'll have to pull a gasket off and see if there is a number on the back.
