Trailer mounted winch?

I was trying to find if anyone has tried a trailer mounted winch.

I have winch laying around, and no space on the front of my truck.

I could mount it under the bed of my truck where the spare tire was and have the lead exit the trailer hitch or I could design a fair lead into the bumper easy enough.

but the type of off-roading I do with this truck now, I have kind of eliminated the need.

since I’m building this little trailer, I thought: why not mid mount the winch on a rotating swivel under the trailer. It could face any of 4 directions easy enough, and the times I have been stuck being pulled backwards was more likely than forward.
So why not via the trailer?

trailer is going to have two batteries on it anyways... so plenty of power at least for a little bit.

anyone ever done a trailer mounted winch? Lessons they can pass on?

my biggest concern would be the oz hitch or what ever it’s called that I have, not holding and seperating from my truck.

I mean, there has to be a reason this isn’t a more often used idea....

That could be a hint to you?

well, it could also be that most people will run a winch on their truck. So no need to run a second.

id prefer not to run a winch on my truck...so the trailer... if not with legitimate negatives, is still a possibility.

Attach the winch to anything you like if you have a power cable long enough and heavy enough.
Store it for travel anywhere that it fits.
And it is always square to the direction of pull.

I'd just worry about the engineering of how the swivel is built. And about the capacity of the trailer frame.

Bruder is the only manufacturer that I can think of off the top of my head that does it. Their frames are pretty stout though. I don't know if it's an option or comes standard, but I've seen pictures of both of their models with a rear facing winch.

I think it would be easy to incorporate during the design stage, a bit more work to incorporate afterwards.

How strong is the connection between the trailer and truck?
I was taught to never use the hitch ball as an anchor for winching.
