Trailer tire question

Besides having a common tire between tow vehicle and trailer, what is the advantage of having an MT or an agressive AT on the trailer? Does the tread pattern really add any performance gains?
The common tire is enough reason for me but I'm curious as to what others think.

You will have less rolling resistance with an A/T and therefore better mileage and less tire noise. Other than that, in my 1000's of miles of off highway towing, I have not seen any advantage of the M/T other than compatibility with the tow rig configuration.

:sombrero: Well, like EC says, less noise and rolling res., with AT

Unless a purchase deal can/was made for 6 of the same RUGGED tires, then having the same on your trailer is mostly SOCIAL-looks kinda neat

There ain't no reason for it, it's just the way we doit !!

We are running mts on our trailer for two reasons. When the trailer is following you down a muddy hill, I want it to track behind me not slide around...and its easy to find peoples old mts they are selling/giving away once they reach 1/4 tread so we got ours for free.

as for rolling resistance, i think the size and shape of the tire have alot more to do with rolling resistance than the tread pattern...

Technically... real trailer tires should have lower rolling resistance, and probably stiffer sidewalls than any AT or MT. But, I couldn't find (didn't look very hard) for large trailer tires anyway. And, while the trailer doesn't need motive traction, I wanted it to have latteral traction in mud, so it stays on the trail on off-camber stuff. Not to mention, braking ability in mud.

I agree, and even more so if you have breaks contollable by the towing vehicle. Having breaks on your trailer is mute if your tires have no traction.

our trailer doesnt weigh much and on the trail we usually run them at 8psi to eliminate the bouncing over rocks...seems to handle well at that pressure, then on the street we only run 20 psi.

:sombrero: I've had ProComp AT's on my trailer over 3 1/2 years and they have lasted towing behind two 4wd's and 4 sets of MTs

I've never had any trouble off-road ie: tracking/turning/repositioning/stopping/sidehilling (snow)

I haven't even noticed any mileage difference in my JK with/without trailer

I have no reason to change the tire tread design !!

:sombrero: Heh Heh, I even got over 21 mpg towing the trailer back from Eugene, Oregon

That hurts.

You may commence shutting up now.
:smilies27

I get 17/18 towing it from Fernley, NV to Truckee

Then North on Hiwy 89, but mileage goes very off-roadish !!

OK, HD, I'll commence, to begin, to initiate shutdown-engage SCRAM BREAKER!!

Either that or bad mileage to start with :Wow1: (ouch after seeing quoted mileage)

I do hope as a JK owner with a Base Camp that can be 15mpg :snorkel:
