Hi all,
I’m in the process of building a combination utility/camping/off road open trailer to haul construction supplies, equipment, tools, and toys.
In order to fit my zero turn mower on it, I need 54” clearance between the fenders, which makes the minimum track width I can run around 74 1/2”, tires are 215/75r15 KO2’s.
Tow vehicle is a Land Rover LR3 which has a track width of 72” with 265/65r18 KO2’s.
With the axle at its current width, my track width is 77”, so 2.5” wider per side than the tow vehicle, with 2” narrower tires on the trailer. I can narrow the axle by 1.25” per side, bringing it down to the 74 1/2” i mentioned previously, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it or desirable.
I know generally you’re better off with the trailer riding inside the tracks the tow vehicle makes, but I’m worried that with it being so close yet slightly wider, it will want to slide into the rut on one side and climb out of it on the other, basically towing cockeyed off road and constantly changing sides every time you turn.
I’d appreciate any feedback on whether it’s more desirable to be 1 1/4” wider per side or 2 1/2” wider per side. Thanks
