Train horn

Hey guys

I am going to add a train horn to my rig. Has anyone else played with them? The reason I am adding a train horn is I live and drive in a part of the world where horns are used daily and for the most ridiculous reasons and it is time that I have a horn to crush all other horns on the road. Who has the best train horn?

I have thought about adding a train horn for some time. I just got back from North Carolina last week where I happened across a Train enthusiast that runs a miniature train ride company for parades and parties. After talking to him and looking at his setup I learned that the horns require significant volume (he had three tanks comprising of about 6 gallons) and not much PSI (40-60psi depending on horn). He also offered me a rebuilt horn he had at his shop for $60. I declined as I am not ready to make the modifications needed yet, and was afraid it would end up like the dozen or so things I have collected for similar project that I haven't yet found time for.

You may want to check your state law before adding train horns to a motor vehicle since most states have laws against such alarming systems.

Kinda like.....rolling coal, super bright headlights, super bright driving lights, driver operated rear floodlights, driving on the road with super bright light bars on, etc......

Often thought of adding a diesel rig horn but not a train horn. Went to a salvage yard and bought a big truck horn to add a bit of clout to my wimpy LR horn.

No idea where you live but that may not be a good idea. I've lived a couple of places in Asia where traffic is always very tight, the last being the Philippines. People expect car and truck horns, they don't expect something louder, and having someone swerve or otherwise reflexively react could cause serious issues, not to mention possibly bring a beat down or worse. Horns seemed to be used to get folks attention but they don't seem to be used maliciously and I can see a train horn being considered some sort of insult worthy of a machete in some areas.

Needless to say I'm not a fan of the things; everyone I know equates them with inconsiderate brodozer driving ******************** with flat brim hats, vaping (************ flutes), "coal rolling", improperly adjusted and illegal LED lights on, etc.

I do remember when stationed in Naval station Memphis in the 60's it was illegal to use your car horn. Many disconnected the horn to avoid sounding it accidentally, now there was a great idea.

I want one so badly!!! I live in Central Florida and almost daily I have some tourist, not paying attention, try to share the lane with me. I had a set or horns from Piaa on my last motorcycle and they seemed to get the point across pretty well.

........still illegal in Missouri to have an elephant in your car .......... gotta wonder what the legislatures were drinking back in the days?

I dont think having one is illegal, its using it inappropriately.. if your trying to road rage some idiot off the road, thats illegal and makes you a jerk. if your scaring off a bear rummaging through camp or chasing some poachers off your land, thats likely legal and its use is defendable/justified.
