transit connect camper?

I think forum participant Liveaboard purchased a Transit Connect with the intention of outfitting it as a camper. The interior cargo space is supposed to be able to handle objects up to 6 feet long, so most people would be able to lie down inside on a bed platform, particularly if the front seat backs were folded forward.

So far, Ford has not offered the Transit Connect with AWD or 4x4. The company does build AWD versions of the full size Transit van, which is not imported to USA. The smaller Transit Connect is front wheel drive only.

That said, it might make more sense to purchase a midsize pickup like the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier. The entry level midsize pickups get just as good MPG as the Transit Connect, and are available with 4x4. Add a small lightweight camper like the Four Wheel Campers Finch or Eagle, and you're ready to go for as long as you care to travel. Or add a simple shell and some tent camping gear for short trips on a budget.
