Travelling around the world in our W123 300TD

I'd like to add my trip to this section of this great website Expeditionportal.com too. I hope this portal will become the place to be for expeditioners anywhere on the world!

The end of 2005 I came across a cool car, which is my favourite allround car. To do the groceries, going to work, and is quite able to do some travelling.

I do have a blog but I need to sit down and lock myself up to update this blog which can be found at http://300td.org.

I already have a thread about the setup of the car here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37908

When possible we're out and about with the W123

Up until now I've driven about 180,000km in total. About 80,000km while travelling. There's a total of 235000km on the clock right now, still not much for an old Benz.

After the first trip to Turkey, Greece and Albania we changed the setup a bit, so now we're able to sleep on the roof and have enough gear to be self-supporting and camp wherever we want.

Meanwhile we've visited about 35 countries and the Benz is still running strong.
The car never broke down really. Once or twice an empty battery because of a dynamo and one time a short-circuiting start-relais. But with a second battery a diesel is still able to start and run, so driving to a garage was no problem.

Lot of kilometers we're driven on vegetable oil, the car is modified to run it in a responsible way. You can throw it in without modifications too by the way.

The expedition is still going on, and we'll try to keep on travelling as much as possible between periods of work/study.

Awesome... I keep reading – “what’s the best vehicle” but this is true evidence you can travel in so many ways.... Having been to Wadi Rum a couple of years ago, I’m amazed you made it, the road in and out, even though well driven is very soft sand. Our guide go the Nissan Patrol stuck at one point.. however we did have bald road tyres fitted….

Keep up the travels….

Fantastic! What a great platform to use. Keep posting pics!

I have been dreaming a route that takes me along a few of your locations.

Jurgen,

Thank you so much for posting these pictures!

The Benz is still really popular around here (Berkeley/SF) and remains an excellent choice for travel.

That is so awesome!!! I was just in traffic with my wife the other day, and we saw one of these old mercs putter past us. She said " I love that car, how much is it, and does it do Diesel". Also a cheaper option than the Syncro we've been hunting for.

I really really miss our 83 300TD, it was a sedan but I can imagine how nice a wagon would be.
Great report, keep the updates coming and thanks for running such a great platform.

I love that car and that engine. Hopefully one day I can add it next to a 300sl gullwing.

My first car was an 89 190e 2.3, drove the piss out of that car and loved every moment of it

Great cars!!

Absolutely wonderful. Thanks much!

I will always enjoy your trip photos. I think you are nuts going through that much water, in a two wheel drive, but it sure looks like a wonderful trip. My wife and I really hope to follow your example someday.

Cheers

Great to see a couple traveling the globe in a not so EXPO type of vehicle, but showing it doesnt matter what the vehicle is, its just the face that they're out there doing it

Awesome work and keep the photos coming
