Selling my 100 series and just bought a 2012 Tundra. I was running a roofnest wedge on my 100 and a little build in the back. I’ve been doing a lot of research on how I want to setup the tundra and I’m stuck between a wedge type like LonePeak, full pop up Tune M1, or stay with a simple bed rack/topper and a rtt on top.
This will be my daily driver and plan to do mostly weekend trips with 2 people. I don’t plan on doing a build or if I do I want it to be able to still throw a sheet of plywood wood in the truck for hauling for truck stuff. My concerns of any truck bed camper is water, dust, and bug intrusion being your sleeping is connected to your truck bed, BUT the ease of being able to go in and out of bed without climbing over someone or going outside is a huge bonus. I do know a lot of dust and water intrusion has to do with the actual truck bed itself.
Here’s my pros and cons of the 3
Lone peak
Pros- Cheap! Good interior space compared to a GFC or plain rtt, like the look, weight is less than m1 slightly more than just a rtt and topper.
Cons- Don't know if I trust the build quality for long term, hard to find info on the waterproofness of them. Would really like to hear some experience with owners of dust/water, build quality. The Super pacific seems like it's the better option but double the price. Also concerned about the sleeping vs the M1, I feel like the wedge really limits your inside comfort for say winter camping even without a build out.
Tune M1
Pros- Way more space, build quality looks to be better? (Hard to tell). The option to sleep east to west would be a game changer for comfort of staying in the camper for winter camping.
Cons- More than double the price than the LonePeak, much bigger setup for daily driving, more weight, probably more feel of the camper while driving. Again I wonder about how bad water/dust intrusion on the truck bed campers are. If it's really worth it to go bigger on still a truck bed vs a slide in camper that is sealed separately I really wouldn't want to show up to camp after being stuck behind someone and having your camper and sleeping area full of dust.
Regular wedge RTT and Bed rack/topper-
Pros- Sleeping area is separate and is only opened when entering and leaving vs having it fully opened unless the tailgate and hatch is closed. Price is half of the lone peak,
Cons- Big one not being able to enter and exit tent into your camper, no hanging out area at all. Probably would not winter camp this same as my 100 setup too annoying to try climbing down a ladder with snow falling on you just to grab something you forgot.
