Trying to advise a friend on 100 purchase

Hey folks:

Long time lurker and land rover owner (rangies and series mostly). Trying to advise a friend from across the country on purchasing a 1999 lc. Low miles clean car fax regular maintenance but considerable rust under the vehicle. Can anyone advise me how the rear bumper attaches to the chassis and does the fuel tank have a factory skid plate holding it in or is that plate part of the tank? Wondering what kind of can of worms were opening if we try to replace that rear bumper and if I should expect problems with the tank given the rust in the pics. See pics of the fugliness! How do you rust belt people deal with this stuff!? (Rhetorical question!)

Thanks for any input.

Yikes. Personally, I would not buy, unless you really like drill and tapping. One reason I stay away from NE and other rust prone states when buying a car.

pass on it, theres got to be something better around, even if you got to travel a bit further afield and pay a few $ more. that rust aint going to fix itself......:iagree:

I agree it is probably not worth it but want to know how that bumper is attached. The only parts schematics I could find online don't show how it bolts to the chassis. Any info here on this? Thanks for the responses.

The bumper shell bolts over the cross member from the bottom and as I recall the wheel well, it clips on the top. Been a few weeks :D

Thanks very much. So the schematic shows a large metal piece under the plastic panel. This part bolts to the rear cross I assume? I was hoping there would be space between this piece and the chassis. I bet it's pretty crusty up there. Thanks for the info. Definitely a pass on this one.

Correct, the "Back Step Reinforcement" has studs the bolt through the frame, nuts are accessed from the bottom side.

You may be confusing the bumper with the rear crossmember? The pictures show a rusty rear crossmember, which is a welded part of the frame. The bumper cover is exactly that, a cover that goes over the rear crossmember.

In short, not replaceable.
