Tucked exhaust?

I don't have a good close-up of my exhaust tip but on my Chevy it routes behind the passenger rear wheel and exits to the side. Pics that I do have are below. It seems to be quite exposed and I could see it catching something even in mild conditions. Does everyone leave the factory exhaust as-is and never have an issue or do guys have it tucked? The local custom exhaust shop could probably do something for not a ton of money but I'm wondering it's even a concern.

I'll post a better pic later but for now....

On my truck I cut it right after the axle right before the last hanger, so it is a turn-down behind the axle. I had already bent it on a snow (ICE) pile when I backed into a parking space within a month of getting the truck. I have never NOT bent one on a pickup eventually--it is just a question of whether I back it into the tire or up into the body...

I don't know if I would do that on a van, as the CO could easily find its way into the cabin while idling in traffic.

I have ripped off two different factory exhaust systems on my van wheeling and smashed two different tips. Once I ripped it off and wrapped it around the axle so bad I had to chain the loose part to a tree and pull it off the axle!! How does it get that way??

Funny, you posted that just as they were putting another factory tail pipe on my work van today....

I smashed it pretty good late this morning trying to get to a tower.... Out of 4 locations today, I was only able to get to one.... think I finally found the limits of my Express....

SO, I finally put in my arguments for a Quigley at work.... or a 4wd truck with a service body.....

Anyway, to answer the question, aparently, yes, the tailpipe is a concern... right behind the tire is a stupid place for it in my opinion... as soon as you come down the back side of anything... BANG.

As far as how to deal with it.... I would see if you can tuck everything up nice and high, and maybe notch the body enough to tuck the tail pipe in, while letting it exhaust OUTSIDE the body lines of the truck(IMPORTANT here in Mass)....

Limited slip, and more ground clearance are what these vans need...

My van has the G80 locking/limited slip rear diff. There seems to be some debate on the internet whether it is a true locker or a limited slip with clutches but I don't really care, I just know it works! A lot of guys swap in Detroit TrueTrac's when the G80 gives up. Maybe they could modify your van?

I'll have to look into the MA laws and maybe talk to guy who owns a shop that does inspections. I definitely want to be within the law and not fill the cabin with fumes. I'm not wild about cutting body panels but routing through the bumper could be an option.

Actually through the bumper is a great idea. I would just add about a foot of flexible pipe in the tail pipe area.....in case you whack your bumper....or someone else does.... just use a hole saw thats about a half inch larger than your pipe......

They wont modify my van, or let me do it.

heres how i did mine, angle is deceptive but nothing hangs below the frame. its a little louder than i hoped, but sounds much better than the old exhaust. simplest "true duals" you can make tho, gotta love how ford setup the exhaust on the old 460s.

That is EXACTLY how I was going to do mine until my dad brought up what r_w said. Run it out the side, up high, if it bothers you.
