Tundra For Expedition??

What do you guys think about a 4dr Tundra for a expedition rig? Does anyone have any pictures of there progress on theres??
Thanks

My personal thoughts are that its too big of a truck for expedition use. If you were going to do it, then I think an older body style would be better.

Why not? There are people using much bigger rigs for their expeditions. I think the Tundra is a great platform to work with.

I guess it depends on what type of expedition people are thinking about. I usually go wheeling with my Dad and his group and their idea of "expedition" is 60 degree inclines and scorpion rockcrawlers so I might be jaded.

That said, unless you are looking at the single cab short bed tundra (which isn't the best setup for an expedition rig) the other models have a really long wheelbase. Even on mild trails that presents problem. Add to this the fact that this is a W I D E truck and you are starting in the negative as far as functionality.

If this is someones dream to do it, then by all means. It just seems to me that you would have to spend thousands of dollars to compensate for the size of the truck to just have parity with a smaller more nimble vehicle.

And don't even get me started on the fuel tank. What goober put a 20 gallon tank on a fullsize 400hp truck. :yikes:

Wow, only 20-gallons on the new Tundra, worse than my 4Runner at 24.

I think a double cab Tundra would be appropriate for about 95% of what most people would be doing. My current rig is a Land Rover 130 double cab with terrible turning radius and it has been a wonderful rig, wouldn't trade it for the world. I have done lots of tough tight trails in it and it just take a little more work than the short wheelbase trucks but it still gets through.

The Tundra seems to be a great platform.

I am driving the Mojave Road with one this weekend (with a FWC on top). I will let you know how it goes... I am actually really looking forward to it!

Every vehicle has its limitations, some are too large to fit down tight trails, while other smaller more nimble vehicles are too small for a family of four and all the gear for a muti-day outing. The Tundra of either generation would make an excellent platform as long as you realize its limitations.

If large vehicles couldn't be effective no one would have anything bigger than an FJ40 or a CJ....

BTW its 26.4, that extra 6 gallons gets you a little further down the road...

I hope you'll have lots of pics Scott! That's one trip we've got planned for a couple years down the road!

Are we talking about the new body style or the first generation of Tundra?

I don't see the size of a vehicle as a limiting factor. The only limiting factor is an owner's imagination and driving experience. Look at Mogs, Pinz's, Fuso's, Earthroamers, etc. Short and long wheelbases both have their pros and cons.

If there were one perfect vehicle for all applications, than you would see that one vehicle being used here by a large majority of the members. Clearly we all have different needs from a vehicle for varied terrains. I maybe can't crawl up Johnson Valley but then a rock buggy can't go from Prudhoe Bay to Patagonia with the same comfort level I can either.

I like the Tundra and have nothing bad to say about it.

I do really like my current 4Runner with it's short wheelbase and narrow width of just 66.5 inches! I've never been stopped by a tight turn or a narrow spot (except da Squeeze in Anza~Borrego which I chose not to go through anyway!...Yikes!...I'm not nutz!).

Here are a couple easy links for spec info. to compare. (I know some folks don't like Wiki...just deal with it!....hehe)

If I owned the new Tundra..............

I would look into either pulling a trailer with an ATV/Dirt bike.....for etc. toys. Park at your campsite and continue to explore on your other little rigs.....in the tight areas. And even save gas in the mean time!

Or to travel lite..........You could just put a dirt bike on a rack on your bumper, and ditch the trailer idea.

.....just some SWR ramblings............

.

It is the first-gen Tundra owned by FWC, with a "new" style camper fitted.

QUESTION: Does anyone know the first year of traction control on the Tundra? My research shows 2004...

I would recommend you get the Overland Journal 2008 Annual Gear Guide. We test a new Tundra on everything from technical, crossed axle terrain to high-speed wash runs.

I will say this for now: 375 HP! We pulled mid- 7 second 0-60 runs.

Would this vehicle have anything to do with the vehicle that you are taking to South America?

(I am still trying to figure out what you will be using on that trip)
