UPDATE ON 1967 FJ40

Last year I posted a thread on a trip I took with my dad in my '40: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/55226-A-Trip-Back?highlight=fireflyr

Here's an update on some of the improvements I've made since then. The 4 wheel disc conversion was finished and has been one of the best mods to date. The vehicle stops straight and true every time. It isn't power assisted so moderate brake pedal pressure is required but it is very linear with excellent feedback. The proportioning valve is adjusted to the mid position.

New Toyota steel wheels were purchased to clear the calipers and I kept the 33 x 9.5 x 15 BFG's.

The 3 speed / column mount transmission was starting to jump out of 1st gear and the I was getting tired of wiping up the gear oil from leaks in the speedo cable. I found a 4 speed H42 locally for $100 and traded a friend my bellhousing for the 4 speed one. The '3 speed' transfercase was kept for a low low 1st gear with the adapter gear and spacers purchased from SOR.

Well done. 4-wheel disc brakes is an excellent mod for driving these old trucks. I just gave away an H42 in really good condition a few months ago.

All new '4 speed' clutch components and a resurfaced flywheel were installed including replacing the original clutch master and slave cyllinders. The pilot bearing was removed using the whitebread method. Actually, we didn't have any wonderbread so I used a couple Hawaiian bread loaves. It took 2 loaves (they're small) and a couple whacks with a punch and mallet and it popped out. Cool trick.:Wow1:

The Driveshafts were resized, the 4 speed is about 3" longer than the 3 speed. The rod was also lengthened for the high/low on the t case.

I pulled the speedo output apart and replaced all of the o-rings and the felt washer. 1st time since I bought it in '03 that it hasn't leaked.

When I had everything installed I noticed that the tranny hump was contacting the transmission. I replaced the body mounts (original) with a set of poly bumpers from SOR. Not only did it reduce alot of the noise and vibration but it made the ride ALOT smoother.

I treated the Paki-top with a gallon of Canvak. Maybe a carpet kit may take care of the rest of the road noise, but for now I'm finished.

I called my dad last night. He'll turn 80 this March. He said he's up for another trip to the North Coast. I can't wait.

My understanding is that Land Cruisers don't leak - they mark their territory.

So very nice. It's motivating to see someone give such devoted attention to an immaculate truck like this.

Very nice.

Whose rear kit did you use for the rear discs? Whose proportioning valve? I put rear discs on my buddy's 67 last year. It already had discs up front and power brakes. I used a Summit proportioning valve, but it will still lock up the rears first on a panic stop. I would like to change out the valve to a better one. The rear kit was from JT Outfitters.

Whose front kit did you use? I need to put at least front discs on my '73.

Thanks

Now that I think of it, I probably should see if removing the residual valve makes any difference.
