V.S.A Vehical Seperation Anxiety how to cope

My first experience was when my van broke down and I was trying to hitch hike with a RM7 downhill bike(not easy or safe 5-6K ). A great guy and his dog picked me up and we got to talking. He was a photographer for Patagonia and lived out of his van. I was also living out of my van and about an hour later he asked how I was coping?
Coping with what I ask...

How do you guys deal

Hasn't anyone gotten a little uneasy when planing a trip and figuring out that not everyone's vehicle is needed.
Or, how about when you must leave your rig behind to get parts or something else.
I have to say that when I leave my rig behind, I take a big duffle with me =)

Just about the only time I don't mind is when traveling in my buddy's decked out Sportsmobile. It have plenty of luxuries to keep my mind off of the subject.

I'm surprised that nobody has chimed in.

Maybe we're all too ashamed to admit it?

I feel dislocated and out of sync when I'm co-dogging a trip. It's not my vehicle, it doesn't have the handy bits that I've stashed away in it.
A friend has ridden with me a couple times and it seems like he brings the kitchen sink. It wasn't until I rode with him that I understood why.

I don't like leaving my truck behind. I actually find it worse when I choose to leave it behind rather then when something breaks and I'm forced to leave it behind (only happened once, rear drive shaft). I do have to admit that I really dont like leaving it at home though, even when just going into Norfolk or something where a truck isnt needed, I still just prefer to be in my truck.

When I spent 3 weeks in Japan last year, I was really missing my truck. Not that I would want to drive there - it is so expensive! But you feel like you have lost a certain amount of independence.

I think that is the longest I have every gone without driving anything since I got my license.
