Visiting California.....Firearm questions

I know our (AZ) CCW is worthless in CA so I am asking:

How can a firearm legally be carried in CA?

What is the maximum magazine capacity?

Is there a total rounds carried restriction?

Is there a "so many step to fire" rule for storing a firearm in the car?

Thanks,
Dave

Guns may be kept in the car if unloaded and locked up, not accessible to the driver. So in the trunk, in a case, unloaded, is fine. Behind the seat in a pickup, unloaded in a case, is fine. If you have kids, and perhaps otherwise, the cases should be locked, but that goes without saying.

If you're keeping ammo as well, it must be physically seperate from the gun. Gun in a case behind the seat, ammo in the glove box, is fine.

I don't know about loaded magazines, but they're probably okay if they're treated as other ammo, and kept physically seperate.

Hi capactity magazines are fine to possess if you bought them legally. I *think* the ban is on sale of new ones only.

No "total rounds carried" rules, as far as I know.

Note that this applies to urban areas, the rules may be looser in rural areas.

This is my understanding of the GUN Carry law WITHOUT CCW.
You can not legally carry any gun on your person, Except for transportation. Example would be carring to and from your house to the car. car to gun shop, car to hunting spot. Example of not legal to carry. while you are out walking the dog, going for hike. bike ride.
There are some Guns that are just not can't have in california. I would check the State website for the list.

I'm not taking my AR-15. Just a Sig P245. So magazine in glove box and firearm in console might be OK?

No, that is still accessible to you. The ammo up front is fine, the gun needs to be secured in the trunk or someplace where you cannot get at it without stopping the car.

True.

Think of it this way: if its convenient to get to and use in a hurry, it's probably not legal. This is California, after all.

Bottom line, the cop who pulls you over is probably a pro-gun kinda guy. Keep your gun in a case and you'll probably have a discussion about what great kit Sig's are. Keep it loose in your center console, and you're going to have a totally different conversation.

Exactly, the glove box, locking or not, is not a legal option in KA. If you have time the NRA has hand-out pamphlets for each state outlining the options. Worth getting for every state you plan to visit or might want to visit. We used to have a stack of them for KA when I worked in a shop and then one for each neighboring state for shop reference.

You can find transport laws at the link above.

And unless they have changed it..........there is a CA. law that allows you to carry a firearm at your "Campsite" which is considered an extention of your home.....or a Temporary Residence.

Then they tell you to check with local police for rules when you are in a Park which claims to have a gun ban. Such as Yosemite.
