It's commonly used in the industrial world, as you can imagine that some of these larger machines hold a lot of expensive oil, the oil test checks for metals and oil condition, its more about saving money from not needing to change oil while keeping tabs on your engine for the larger machines.
I just order in a kit, when i'm ready to test the oil, i've gotten them from CAT dealer before and now i just use an oil testing company here in Aus.
It should be around $20 usd, i don't think its too expensive, considering a new engine is around 13-15k AUD for my vehicle, its an easy non evasive way to see monitor the internals
