1986 T3 Vanagon Westfalia ‘fakefalia’ Syncro Camper - £37,500 (Price reduced as I would like to sell before moving house in a few weeks...)

Just returned from a 350 mile round trip to the T3 Bus Meet and the time has come to pop the old girl up for sale. I have been considering the sale for the past year. The reason for selling is that we have a T4 Cali Exclusive we are now using more for camping and I’m currently doing up a T3 Escorial Green Doka which will allow me to still scratch my T3 itch, also we are planning to move house soon so 2 VWs will be more than enough.

I call it a ‘Fakefalia’ as it started life as an Escorial Green T3 Syncro Caravelle. I purchased the van in April 2015 and it has been a 7 year on/off build to get it to the excellent condition it is in today. The van has wanted for nothing and the parts and equipment used are the best available on the market.

It’s a long description so please drop a message is you have any questions. I have a 7 year / 43 page build thread on Club 8090 covering everything - https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=141925.

I also have a direct ‘photo only’ link thread available - https://kflynn.smugmug.com/VW/Syncro-Timeline

Engine:
  • Subaru EJ25 2.5 non turbo with all RJES parts. I had the engine rebuilt in December 2018 by Subaru specialist Foresters in Wolverhampton. Work included a full engine rebuild, new oil & water pump, timing belt, big end / main bearings, new right head, front crank sensor and new front cam cover. Engine uses the Subaru air filter.
  • Brickwerk’s oil pressure & temperature sensors with dashboard VDO gauges.
  • Mocal 19 row oil cooler & Subaru Impreza oil cooler sandwich plate.
  • Custom stainless steel exhaust made & fitted by Demand Engineering, Suffolk.
  • Brickwerk’s front to rear coolant pipes and larger option radiator & duct kit.
  • Outfront Motorsport short sump, oil pickup and short pan dipstick.
  • ECU and wiring is housed in a plastic box in the bottom of the wardrobe.
Gearbox | Front Diff:
  • Aidan Talbot 4.57 gearbox with oiling plates and HD gears slightly longer 3rd and 4th, designed for a 2.5 Subaru, works out 70mph at 3300 on 205R14C. Mainshaft Bearing Retention Plate and Input Shaft.
  • Front diff with new pinion and bearing and refurbished VC by Holman Engineering
  • Linkage stripped treated, failing parts replaced.
  • Fluids changed in both ever two years using Smith and Allan 75w/90 Fully Synthetic and Molyslip GM6RA every two oil changes (as recommended by Aidan Talbot)
  • Brickwerk’s heavy duty sliding joint propshaft fitted.
  • New actuators fitted to both during the build.
Fuel System:
  • New fuel lines
  • Stainless fuel tank straps
  • New fuel filler seal
  • Electric fuel injected pump with Brickwerk’s stainless fuel pump mount.
Brakes:
  • Front standard with Brickwerk’s Black Diamond pads & discs.
  • Rear disc brake kit supplied & installed by Ultimate Engineering.
Suspension | Steering:
  • Brickwerk’s stock front & rear suspension with Suplex springs and Bilstein B6 Sport shocks.
  • New trailing arms and fixings.
  • Front and rear components were stripped cleaned and sprayed before refitting.
  • Powerflex bushes where you will see the benefit.
  • PAS steering with new Brickwerk’s front to rear PAS hoses.
  • Powerflex steering rack bushes & new rubber steering couplings
  • Front & rear drive shafts have all being stripped and rebuilt using Brickwerk’s Thermoplastic CV boots.
Wheels:
  • Currently running on 5 x 16” Mefros steels with BF Goodrich 225/70 R16 tyres. Tyres are all in excellent condition and have been rotated as they should.
  • Rear RMW wheel carrier fitted for 5th wheel.
Exterior Lighting:
  • Halogen crystal upgraded headlights with LED side bulbs and standard headlight bulbs.
  • Upgraded headlight wiring loom.
  • Smoked indicators and rear lamps.
  • Subaru alternator tested and rebuilt in June 2022.
Body | Roof:
  • The Westfalia roof was professionally fitted to the van by Boxwagen in Bournemouth. Boxwagen also had the metal part of the roof sprayed and the poptop colour coded to the van and the interior H-bar & lock mechanism power coated.
  • I wanted the van to look identical to an original Westfalia. At the time I had two donor Westfalia vans for choosing the best roof and interior parts for the conversion.
  • New seals and NLAVW roof canvas. Stainless fixings and luggage rack cleats.
  • All new window & door seals.
  • All locks stripped and rebuilt.
  • Sliding door hinge mechanism stripped, new bearings & rebuilt.
  • New top tint windscreen
  • As you can see I choose not to fit the three Westfalia utilities (water, fridge vent & hook up) but these are all installed in other locations as mentioned in the leisure section.
  • Van was completely resprayed in 2017 with the black bottom band. We are in a hard water area and this did not last well so I put it back to its original Escorial green.
  • When the van went to the body shop I asked them to go over everything and fix and repair anything they noticed, it came back in June 2022. As you can see from the photos I had the following done……..
  • Bottom half respray to remove black paint
  • I had all the seams re-done as it was getting sprayed anyway.
  • Drivers side seat belt mount repair.
  • Cab step factory holes filled.
  • Wheel arch spats removed and made good.
  • Lower front panel (251805036) replaced.
  • Bumpers sprayed satin black.
Leisure Electrical:
  • The van is completely off grid / self sufficient and I have not needed the 240v hook up since fitting the solar panels.
  • Hook up socket is behind the engine flap and is managed by a Victron Energy Blue Smart IP65 Charger 12/10.
  • Stainless steel twin custom solar panel roof mount (designed by Curtis Long). This mount can easily be removed, undo 8 nuts and disconnect the cable to remove when you want to clean the roof. Can be removed by one person.
  • Gas strut roof lift assist kit fitted.
  • 2 x 100w flexible solar panels from Photonic Universe (I bought a third panel in case one failed and this is included too)
  • 100AH 12 gel deep cycle battery from Photonic Universe.
  • The solar and alternator charging is managed by an intelligent CTEK 250s
  • The leisure system is monitored by the Victron BMV-700 high precision battery monitor.
  • I installed the leisure wiring system and last year I improved on my original design and moved all the components to a hidden shelf at the bottom of the old fridge cupboard. The CTEK, Victron and main fuse box are all located here.
  • The main fuse box is for the Webasto Heater, Tap, USB & 12v sockets, Water Level Sensor and the National Luna 40l Compressor Fridge. Fuse box has spare availability for future devices.
  • There is a second smaller leisure fuse box under the dash that connects the dash 12v, BlueSea USB, Stereo, Map Reading Light and PWM fan controller. Fuse box has spare availability for future devices.
  • Finally there is a small third leisure fuse box that lives at the top back of the wardrobe and feeds the 3 internal National Luna lights. Fuse box has spare availability for future devices.
  • I have also run a small fuse box from the main battery to the dash and I have the headlights connected to this, the brightness is excellent while still looking stock.
  • The internal lights have three brightness settings and can be set to white or amber, amber being good in the evening to deter bugs.
  • The 12v 2 pin Berker socket has been upgraded to a UK 3 pin socket.
  • The 12v Webasto heater lives under the rock n roll bed and is excellent for heating the van.
  • Shurflo tap upgrade from Go Westy.
Interior
  • As I mentioned I had 2 donor Westy vans and the interior is made up of the best from both.
  • All metal furniture parts have been blasted and power coated RAL 8028.
  • The interior engine bay, floor, doors, panels and behind the dash have all been fitted with sound deadening.
  • Floor (front & rear) is insulated with premium gold insulation by Harrison Trim.
  • Interior is insulated with foil closed cell foam insulation by Harrison Trim, as well as pipe lagging where there was space to add it.
  • Interior is lined with a vapour barrier.
  • All the rock n roll bed foam has been replaced with new.
  • All the curtains have been black out thermal lined in a colour to compliment the interior.
  • Last year all interior panels were remade in foam board and covered in lovely deep brown leatherette which really suits the interior.
  • Dash stripped, blasted and powder coated satin black.
  • Cooker is fed from a refillable R67 bottle by Gaslow.
  • Westaflia water tank installed and filled from inside, replaced all water hoses last year.
