Wagon Tent Spector Off Road

Anybody used or bought a wagon tent from SOR for a Landcruiser? I'm thinking of one for my 80.

Thanks

I honestly never heard of them until now. Seems like a good concept and idea. I'd be interested to see how they would do in rainy weather at what looks like a seam where the gap would be in the upper part of the tailgate.

It's an interesting concept but $400+ seems like a good chunk towards a roof top tent or high quality base camp tent.

I know I couldn't make use of it myself due to the drawers. Plus, all your equipment would have to be taken out of the cargo area and off the roof. I'd like to see it in person to get a feel for the quality though.

Cal,

But you see I have a M101 trailer for the all the goodies, wouldn't need to take them out of the Cruiser.

For less than a quarter of the price, you could try something like this, if that's the route you want to go. http://www.brian894x4.com/trucktent.html

I haven't tested mine out in the field, but it was cheap, easy to install and I think would do the job in spring/summer weather and hold up in up to a moderate rain storm.

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do next spring/summer. I hate ground tents with a passion, but sleeping the back just isn't practicle with the gear I carry except for emergencies. I'm considering a roof top tent, except I have some hieght limit issues with my garage and I'm not too keen about adding 100-150 lbs into my roof and I'd have to build a custom rack to support it...

...but anyway, for about $100, a truck tent like that could probably be found to fit your rig. Just do a search for truck tent or canopy tent. Mine came from http://www.eatel.net/~dacinc/DAC/

Truck Tent

Brian,

Yes I have looked at those. I like the wagon tent because it covers the Landcruiser up, windows, etc, so you can sleep after the sun rises. Also I slept in the 80 last fall, and it was pretty cold inside. I remembered someone saying to put a tarp over the truck to keep the radiant heat in. It worked, actually worked too well, ended up opening the door to cool things off. The wagon tent has windows for ventilation. I have my gear in a M101 trailer, so I don't have the problem with removing the gear from the truck.
My only problem with the wagon tent is the color of the unit. I don't really like camo pattern, and I am a hunter.

If I had a pickup I would just put a taller topper on it, with the sliding windows on each side and be set. Ran into a fellow in Kansas this year that sleeps in the back of his truck on every hunting trip. He built in a nice bed and his pups sleep with him.

Grouseman,
did you give up on finding a tent for the trailer?

Man I went thru many hoops to actually have one made specially from a mfg. He kept insisting it wouldn't work, and I just finally gave up. Spent alot of hours designing etc, what a pain in the butt. Anytime you do anything a little differantly mfgs. freek out. So I am thinking of sleeping in the Cruiser and using the trailer for storage, water tanks, shower, and cooking stuff, kitchen, etc. That are my thoughts now.
I need to get going on some kind of idea soon. The wife and I have a big trip coming up this summer, and I would like to have something completed for spring trips also.

Sorry I missed this response. It seem like that tent would work for you. Maybe the retailer can supply some references of people they have sold the tents to and you could get some feedback.

Update,

Well I'm going back to my original concept. Putting a tent on my 101 trailer. The tent will be shipped shortly. It it a tent off of a Venturcraft trailer. Now I have to figure out how to make a swing out door for the 101 trailer and add a kitchen to the door, figure out which way to go on the hot water shower idea and I'm set.:arabia: I've only been trying to figure this out for 18 months. Maybe this spring it will come together. Hope so.

I see i am a tad late on this, but i have seen one in person on an 80 and they are pretty cool for what they are, minimal setup and its an easy one man job.

However, they dont work with roof racks! Not easily anyway!

x2 on the roof rack. They also need a bit of modification around a snorkel if you have one. One of our club members has had one for his 60 for about 10 years and its a good quality piece. For the right rig its just the right thing.
