Wal-Mart will add the iPhone to its Straight Talk smart phone plans, effective January 11. The retailing giant will offer the iPhone 4 (not 4S) with 8 GB storage for $449, and the 16 GB iPhone 5 for $649.

The above are the same prices that Apple charges for unlocked phones with no service contract. The difference is that Wal-Mart is offering to sell the phones for $25 a month, no interest added. The special deal is available for holders of a Wal-Mart credit card. ($25 a month for 18 months = $450, for 26 months = $650)

The financing is available if you sign up for Straight Talk, the phone/text/data service Wal-Mart offers. $45 buys a month's worth of unlimited phone, text and data transfers. The service has no monthly commitment, so you can cancel the service any time.

Straight Talk is a service of TracFone Wireless, a subsidiary of América Móvil, a Mexican company that is the world's fourth largest telecommunications company. TracFone is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), with contracts to use the facilities of Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint in USA. At this writing, we don't know which of these four networks Straight Talk uses for the Wal-Mart iPhones. Since coverage, data speed, and the definition of "unlimited data" differs for each carrier, it's probably best to hold off on your purchase until we have this information.

Straight Talk offers an interesting plan for international calling. For $60 a month, you get the unlimited voice text and data plan for USA, plus the ability to place calls from USA to certain cities in 31 foreign countries. To see if this would work for the numbers you want to call, see http://www.straighttalk.com/unlimitedinternational

Now, a $25 a month iphone and a $45 a month service plan still means $70 a month. There are similar plans from other providers. We need more information on the carrier Straight Talk is using for the iPhone to make a proper comparison. I expect we'll have that info on Jan 11.

I converted my AT&T iPhone 4S to straight talk about 6 months ago, and I've been happy. The only things not working are picture texts and visual voicemail. The MMS issue can be fixed, but I didn't feel like going through the hassle for something I never use. The visual voicemail issue can be worked around using google voice, but I'm thinking once this is official, I may be able to undo that work around. Everything else works great, and I pay $45 a month.
