Look for 1999 -2002 for the Bosch electronics and 4 wheel traction control and better gas mileage. 98's were still GEMS. You will need to look at lots of vehicles to find one that is well maintained. If you are looking for building an overland vehicle, consider the spring conversion. Your newest P38 with EAS is still 12 years old and all the rubber in the EAS system would need replacing as well as a rebuild of the valve block and compressor. Its not a difficult system and the ride is incredible on EAS, but I had to convert for reliability after an airspring blew up in Death Valley on my buddy's truck.
We just sold a 1998 with 119k miles to a friend that we fixed up after taking off the RockRover bumpers. You should be able to find a decent one if you are patient. Good luck.
When you get it, you will need to perform a lot of preventative maintenance for peace of mind. Change all fluids (oil, diffs, tranny, coolant, brake fluid), fix any little electrical issues (check the fusebox for cracks under the relays and get a new one), check for HVAC issues (blend motors, LCD screen, temp gauges), if you have EAS installed, let it sit a few days on level ground to see if any corners are leaning and spray the bags with soapy water looking for leaks.
