I've got my ear to the ground in search of a 4x4 chinook, sandtana or the like, preferably built on a Toyota, so I figured it's a good time to finally stop lurking here. Captnblack's chinook is a prime example, but a bit out of my price range (and I wouldn't mind a good project).

Cheers

Just my opinion but not sure I'd want to be doing much four wheeling with a Chinook. I've got at 98 Chinook and love it but due to it's size, weight and lack of ground clearance I'm not so sure I'd be doing much off roading. I've taken mine places I probably shouldn't have and regretted it. I think if it had four wheel drive I'd end up tearing it up. I just don't think the Chinook set up, even with four wheel drive, should be doing much off road stuff. Now I know there are others here who are going to say I don't know what I'm talking about but I think I have a little knowledge since I do own a four wheel drive Toyota with a FWC mounted on it that I do quite a bit of off roading with and the fact that I also own the Chinook. Anyway, just my opinion about the Chinook set up. On another note, I met a guy in Moab last year who had converted a Chinook to a four wheel drive set up at a cost of $12,000. He stated it was $12,000 wasted as he'd had nothing but trouble with the system. Good luck in your search.

Ended up backing down this road for almost a mile because I took it somewhere I shouln't have last year up in BC. Thing is just too big and heavy and wouln't make the grade I tried to climb. Even with four wheel drive I'm not sure I'd of made it.

4x4 Chinook

I will be posting my Chinook for sale here in the next few weeks but since I saw this post I'll give you first dibs. It's a 1984 Toyota Long Bed 4X4 Chassis with a 22R and a manual 5 speed trans, the chassis has about 180k miles on her and runs like a top. It has the factory straight axle front end which I rebuilt the knuckles with new bearings and seals, also replaced the calipers and rotors. I replaced the rear end with an axle out of an 86 V6, it's beefier, wider and has bigger brakes. I married a 1976 Chinook camper to it, I built an internal cage to strengthen the shell for 4x4 use, I tore out all the old honey comb and replaced with 1"thick blue Styrofoam insulation, re-did all the wood panels, made custom cabinets and drawers. The heater works, stove works, has a coleman fridge cooler and aux battery. I re-upholstered the cushions with sunbrella fabric and has engineered floor in it. It also has the rare 2 hammock cots in it, which are hard to find. The rear has a heavy duty bumper I made with a bike rack built in as well. There's also a grill guard on the front with a 8000lb winch that's included.

I've been all over the west with this thing, I built it in Montana, it's been over all the passes going through the Rockies in Colorado, it's been to Moab and I even completed the "fins and things" jeep trail in Moab. This past year I went to British Columbia with it as well. I wouldn't consider it a rock crawler but definitely can hold it's own, it is in fact a Toyota! I've gotten 19 mpg with it before but would probably estimate 16 would be normal. Let me know if you're interested or have questions. Priced at $11,500 obo text or call is best way to get ahold of me 805-722-5679, it's located in Portland, OR.
