The Canon D10 is a small point and shoot camera packaged for outdoor activities.
The case is waterproof to 30 feet, dustproof, and rugged.
The D10 has a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom and movie mode.
Street price is about $300.

Engadget took the camera to Central America and used it while surfing,
snorkeling, white water rafting and hiking in the rainforest. The results
were good. Read the review here, including sample photos and movies

There's a thorough review by a reader at Imaging Resource

Not many cameras can survive active outdoor activities. The D10 looks
like a great choice when you fear for the survival of your more expensive gear.

I've been using one of the early Pentax WP cameras. 5mp 3x optical zoom. I've had it for about 5 years now. It has survived several snorkeling trips in hawaii and a few 10 day float trips in Alaska. That and every other offroad trip and event in that time. I'll post a few pics when I get a chance. It's taken a lot of great pictures. You can pick them up on ebay with 7 MP for a $100-200.
