What are you guys doing for your spare tire? FJ 40

Good morning everyone! I just picked up a MINT condition '78 FJ, and I am in the process of turning it into a camping/fishing/hunting vehicle for me and my kids. The tires on the truck were shot when I picked it up, and I thought since I was changing those out, I would spring for a set of ATX Mojave rims as well as tires. I am a firm believer in function, so I picked up five, plus the tires, as I want the spare to match what is on the ground so I don't have any issues when I have to use the spare with different radius tires, etc.

The offset of the Mojaves is different than that of the stock rims, and as such the three bolts for the stock spare tire carrier do not quite reach out far enough to bolt the tire on. I did a search here trying to find something, and wasn't able to quite come up with what I was hoping to find. If there is already a post about this if someone could kindly point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated, if not, could you 40 owners give me an idea of what you are doing? I don't even care if I have to replace the entire spare tire carrier, I just want something that functions right, looks good, and I don't have to worry about my spare parting company with the truck when I'm bouncing down the trail.

Thanks!
Dave

You have a couple of choices. You can either get a nice set of spacers (Spidertrax.com) and bolt those to the existing lug bolts, then put on the tires, or remove and replace the old studs with longer ones.

Ok, I just read the post again...I would suggest buying one (1) spidertrax spacer for the spare....that's what I did on my old Troopy....The Spidertrax spacers are top notch, btw.

Thanks for the quick reply Hltopper!

I went to Spidertrax and ordered a set of spacers-I had thought that this was probably the best way to go, but wasn't sure if there was some magical "fix" out there that I was missing.

I appreciate the help, and can't wait to get out there with the kids and enjoy the FJ, thanks again!

No magical fix...but you'll be very pleased with the Spidertrax spacers...they're so pretty it's almost a shame putting a tire over 'em!
