what exactly is this for?

I am new to these trucks and I don't have an owners manual which I am going to have to get. Now my truck temperature indicator is all over the place and it goes up to overheating at times. But I noticed this "coolant" container on the drivers side of the truck and it is empty. Could this be my problem, if so what coolant do I fill it up with?

I agree you should get a manual as soon as you can.

Sounds like there might not any coolant in the radiator. The temperature gauge should rise to normal, about midway, and stay right there, steady as a rock.

When the engine is cold, check the radiator and fill with 50/50 water and antifreeze and then the coolant overflow container should be filled with 50 / 50 water and antifreeze to between min and max.

good luck.

Do you have right hand or left hand drive? My coolant expansion tank/reservoir is on the right side.

Where is the 'coolant' reservoir you are referring to? The reservoir for fluid for the clutch and brakes is on the left side of the dash. By the way, I send you the manual vie drop send, you should have an e-mail you can click on and download it.
On mine the coolant reservoir is outside the cab in back on the passenger side.

Hi Kerry:
Yes, that reservoir on the dash I know about. The reservoir is outside on the back of the cab probably about a gallon in size on the drivers side. I have a 2006. I just find it odd that I would be low on coolant being a 2006 truck with 20000 miles but I will check today. I figured it was a reservoir for the rad. but being diesel, I didnt know if it was something out of the ordinary. By the way, I downloaded the manual thanks.

The manual I sent isn't applicable to a 2006. Someone else on here has the newer manual I think.
