What gauge square tubing?

Ordering up the square tubing for new fenders, lower side storage and lid. Will vary the size - some 1X1, 1X11/5 and 1X2. All of the post I read just say the outer dimensions of the tubing used... What gauge is everyone using?

I generally use 1/8" on most of my larger stuff. On the smaller stuff... I don't know if it matters that much. I'd probably use the thicker. On these trailers, we're not just concerned with overall strength/weight, but we need "bashing resistance". Thicker tubes are more resistant to damage by bashing.

ie: If you band the fender on a rock, a thinner wall will crush a bit, even though the fender will still hold it's shape. The thicker wall is more resistant to crushing damage.

I dont think you want to use the 14 or 16 gauge. 14 might be fine for fenders, but if you plan on standing on them, I would want more. Every piece of tubing on my trailer is 11 gauge (about 1/8")

For those three things you mentioned, I personally would want 11 gauge for most tubing, especially 1x1 and up.

Re-reading my post, I should say... it's not that I'm totally unconcerned about weight. I just don't think you'll save a whole lot by skimping on wall thickness. The weight savings can come from other places, such as a good design right from the start.
