What PTO?

PTO winches are mostly for commercial rigs, even tow truck use hydraulic winces these days. Some of them do have the hydraulic pump connected to a PTO. The Mile marker winch on my truck is fed from the power steering pump, no PTO needed.

I know about pto winches I drove tow truck with two pto winches for years, nothing comes close to a pto driven winch! For casual self recovery use even a cheap Warm electric will work fine as long as the limit of the equipment is not exceeded.

There is so much PTO variety, an answer for you wont exist without knowing more about your desires.
Outputs can be shafts, companion flange, yoke. Front, rear, both. Clockwise, anticlockwise, reversible.
SAE flanged for 'hyd pumps.
Actuation via electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical...
About the only things standardised is the bolt-up to your gearbox. Generically called "6 or 8 bolt".

Further, as I understand, (somebody else should verify...)
Transmissions may share same housing with PTO port. but, some are not assembled with PTO drivegear within.

Btw, while a steeringpump driven Milemarker may be fine for what it is. Its 'nadless compared to horsepower a PTO can transmit.

All good to know. This is in a 1-ton commercial cab & chassis, so if I were guessing, I'd guess there is likely a drivegear within.

So the 6-bolt or 8-bolt is all I need to know? Are the drive gears a universal standard then, so any PTO that will bolt up will work?

I worked on equipment what had PTO already, I dont know much about how to specify new installation. But My guess is no. You probably have to know manufacture date and or serial number at minimum.
Maybe better off visiting a PTO dealer, or at least manufacturer websites.
I expect they have on-line catalogues & application guides. If you plan to search for 2nd hand, At least that should help know whats commonly installed on your chassis.

Yeah, I kind of figured that...but having no experience with PTOs (other than farm tractors and such), I figured I'd ask! ;) Thanks!!

Muncie Power Products makes most of the PTO boxes in use. Here is a link to the website. If you get serious I would call customer service. Before the call figure out what you want to hook to it. Like stated above there are many different types of PTO boxes. All used for different types of driven items.

I believe the G-56 in my 08' Power Wagon can also run a PTO. Would be cool to have a PTO hyd pump. Could add a front mounted snow blower. 345hp snow blower !
