My gen 1 lwb is not so awesome on the highway and I was wondering if its just mine or if the gen 1 is general not awesome. Mine is fine till about 65 anything over that and it just feels like I'm pushing it way to hard. It's a 5sp with 31. X 10.5 on it. Just kinda wondering

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
What do you mean by it feels like you're pushing it too hard? does the engine get rough at higher RPMs? loud? shaky? OR are you just not used to a vehicle that operates at a higher RPM than most?

To me the Gen 1 is comfortable at highway speeds and takes 75mph like it doesn't even care compared to trucks of the same era, this characteristic is what made the Montero stand out. Remember 4x4's (especially boxes on wheels) were typically not so great over 55mph and in the early 80's 55mph was the national limit while the late 80's upped it to 65mph. Compared to SUV's 10-20 years newer than yours i think i'd understand feeling like it's being pushed but 80's for 80's 4x4 on the highway you're driving a rocketship. If you want to bring the RPM's down a few hundred get some 33's, all in all the Gen 1 LWB should be smooth and quiet at 65-75mph cruising between 3,000 and 3,500 RPM.

I just feel a ton of vibration above 65 I think I may have a bad u joint but the feeling comes from the engine. It's all tuned up and runs smooth but you get it above 3000 rpm and it shakes like the space shuttle.

you've got worn drivetrain and/or suspension parts. The truck should ride great at those speeds. Could be a transmission mount, could be a u-joint, could be unbalanced or worn out tires, could be a worn idler arm allowing play in the steering allowing wobble in the front end. Could be tie rod ends, could be many things...

Basically, it's not the truck, it's the summary of it's parts and somewhere in that summary something has gone afoul.

A little back ground. The truck has new gen 2 ucas all new tie rods and ball joints. I have a pitman arm in my garage just need to find the time to put it in. The truck also has coopers at3 tires that have maybe 15,000 on them and new alignment and new shocks all the way around. I'm leaning tword the motor mounts and tranny mounts. Thanks for the info because I kinda thought its just the way the ran back in 1990 . I'll get to work
