Depends on your needs. I'd buy what you need to do what you're trying to do and put the rest into a good lens. It's the lens, after all, that plays a major part in the image.

Very true, neither of those cameras are a big enough jump for me to retire my D70s yet.
I would buy more glass if I had enough money for either of the two cameras.

Which and why?

What type of photography primarily interests you?

Both will serve you well, but if you can afford the D300 and still buy some quality glass (more important), it will likely last you longer. The magnesium alloy body and weather sealing are great for taking off-road.

Although, the HD video that the D90 offers might interest you.

In addition, since the manufacturers seem to be coming out with new models all the time, one might argue that if the D90 offers you enough for now, save your money for an upgrade in 2-4 years. Or, buy another lens.

Neither

D300 for the all metal body.

D700 for the 35mm sensor.

D90 for the quality of the D300 for less money, albeit with less rugged body.

I've had my D300 since December '07 and have taken thousands and thousands of photos. I needed a camera that would be relatively impervious to dust, dirt, rain, vibration, bumps here and there, etc. since I take in on all my off-road forays. It hasn't disappointed me yet! Embarrassingly I accidently (sure wouldn't do that on purpose now would I!) dropped it...and it proved to be 'drop test' tough! I can't say enough about the quality and toughness of the weather seals and overall construction!

Having said all that I would upgrade if it had HD video. I just want the ability, without having another device hung around my neck or waist, to take short vids now and then. I understand through the rumor mill the D300S or D300X (whatever they will call it) will be introduced this coming September: Hopefully it will feature HD video.
