why jerry cans?

just wondering why everybody always uses the jerry cans(that are outrageously expensive) and not the plastic jobs from the farm store or walmart? i understand that the jerry cans are better, but 10, 12, 15 times better? i bought 10 5 gallon blitz cans fro $5 apiece. i cant even afford one jerry cans at todays prices. just wondering.

also, i have never owned a jerry can, so i may in fact be uneducated on their merit, but $80 for a gas can seems steep.

1. They stack nice and close in a row.

2. They are more squared of and thus take up less space.

3. They are super tough and don't leak like their 5 dollar distant cousins

4. Oh and the cool factor is pricless:)

You really should get your hands on one just to see for yourself the differences between the two types... Thinking Sceptors here.

Speaking of which aren't the Scepter's mad3 in CA? The cool factor is priceless, because even if you don't at least you will look like you know what your doing, unless of course you give yourself a gas bath using a nozzle that was supposed to fit and didn't and then lost the filter end of that POS filler nozzle in the fule filler line and learned it was killing your pump time because it was restricting inbound fuel flow. Yep so nothing but super siphon or safety siphons for this guy.

I think 80 bucks for a jerry can is ridiculous also. Hit up your local army surplus shop. Buy 'em used, but watch for rust.

You can also find them several places on the internet for a heck of a lot less than 80 bucks.

Once you have one you'll realize you were wasting your money with anything plastic or that was sold at your local parts store.

You get what you pay for.

Does not leak if tightly closed. Can be abused beyond normal use.

I do agree that 80 bucks is too much. Paid 50 Canadian for mine.

Not to be a ****, but 08 Taco and 07 FJ cost a few pennies. Same as quality gerry cans.

I have several types of fuel cans including the mentioned $5-10 blitz cans. If your looking at putting 5 gallons in your garage then buy your blitz cans. I have 4, 2 with gas, 1 with deisel and one with kerosine. I won't carry them on my vehicle. I have seen to many bloat and leak in the sun.

I have 4 metal Military surplus cans, 2 nato style and 2 good old US made units. 2 recently turned up with a lot of rust when I emptied the fuel. I rotate my fuel every 6 months and use stabilizer. Cheap nozzles or real nozzles I always had fuel leak when using the metal cans. I only have history with the Scepter cans (4full of gas, 5 brand new on the shelf empty) for 4-5 years. I only had a can leak once out of the breather when filling the cruiser. I wouldn't pay $80 for a scepter, but i have paid around $50 which is still nuts.

If you can find used metal cans I would go that route or try the new Carb/Child safety act complient cans. I saw a dozen used nato cans at a army surplus store in Idaho for $25 each a few months ago. If I didn't have so many cans already I probably would have picked up a few more.

There is an old saying... "If you have to ask... "

Others have put it in perspective, but you have to start by not coming out of the hole with radical assumptions about the price of a decent fuel container. They are not all $80, in fact up until the ban on Scepter cans they were selling new for ~$50. Compare that to the average price of a 5 gallon Blitz can, $10 (Amazon had listing ranging from $11-16 each, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say $10, can you get them cheaper, sure but you can't benchline prices on anomolies).

The Scepter is 5+ times stronger, 5+ times better sealing surface, 5+ times better puncture resistance. The price is all relative. The same comparison could be made with the Wedco or NATO cans... you get what you pay for. You can still get new Wedco's in the $50 range, and used anything in the $10-25 range at surplus stores, eBay or here on ExPo.

I'm not sure about Jerry cans but I have some cheapo 5 gallon Wal-Mart cans and some nice motorcycle fuel jugs and you can definitely tell the difference. The cheap cans look and feel like they are going to explode from heat and pressure every time I take them to the desert and that's sitting comfortably on a trailer, I couldn't imagine what they would look like after hours of being bounced around off road.

I don't have any good fuel cans *yet*. I'm suffering with the crappy Walmart cans.

I bought one can, and I've used it once. It's one of the kind where the spout never gets stored inside the can, it's got the seal on the end that you have to try to open, and it has no proper vent, but has the vent tube inside the spout.

After the first use, I realized it was a complete piece of garbage. It takes about 10 minutes to get all the fuel out because it's so slow because of the crappy vent design. And I ended up spilling tons of gas all over the place. It's just worthless. So, $10 for a can that got used once. How expensive is that?

I have 4 other cans I bought a little earlier, these are the type where the spout does store inside, but there is still no external vent, it has the vent tube inside the spout. These are also slow, but not as bad as the previously mentioned one. They also leak all the time, and I can't store them in the vehicle for long. I do use them, but I hate them, and long for the days of external vents.

The old plastic cans from 10-20 years used to be ok. But you can't buy a good can anymore. CARB is MMMMed in the head if they think these new designs are better. I've never spilled so much fuel as with the new ventless cans.

I've actually been wondering though, what do Jerrycans do for a vent?

i thought this would get some good discussion. first off, this was not meant to be a bash jerry cans thread. if it sounds that way, it was not intended to be. i was just wondering if the cost was justified.

when i said that i could not afford an $80 gas can, i probably should have said that i choose not to buy an $80 gas can. i guess that i am more dissapointed in the fact that these $80 cans that i have seen for sale were $40 before the ban kicked in.

it sounds as thought the merits of a good gas can out weigh the cost. any more input will be welcome.

kinda same subject, why would any body pay $350 for a snorkel when $40 of pvc wouold build the same thing?:wings: had to.

thanks agian

i paid 40.00 for my wedco NATO style about 5 years ago. worth it to me for that price. Didn't leak then, doesn't leak now. Sure its heavy, but man I like how beefy it is.

For those who can't stand the Blitz cans (metal or plastic) due to the leaking and don't want to spend an arm and a leg for the military style, I highly recommend the standard style Scepter red fuel containers. I picked up one a while back and it doesn't leak liquid or fumes and flows pretty well.
