Wide angle - zoom lens on a budget

I use a Nikon D70 and are'nt really a camera buff, but enjoy a good quality picture.

Due to my move to Oman and selling a bunch of garage stuff
i was thinking along the lines of some new glass.

Wide angle for the desert, and a zoom for the serrengetti...

"kenya and tanzania just got a whole lot closer....and then the OJ blog showed me an excellent renta Toyo company.....my company annual trip home allowance covers planes trains and automobiles...so a self drive safari is definately back on the radar"

I'm thinking value for money, rather than 1000's of dollars for optical perfection.

Any recomendations ?

What range do you consider "wide angle" on the D70?

Best ultra-wide angle for the money is the Tokina 12-24 f/4 -- which on a crop-factor body like the D70 equates to a "wide angle" in 35mm terms. Bar none. The Sigma 12-24 isn't as good optically, IMHO, and isn't fixed aperture but costs similar money. The Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 G ED is the best wide/ultra-wide angle lens on the market right now, but at $1,600 costs nearly 4x the Tokina ... which can be had new for around $500 or used in perfect condition for $400.
