Winch cutout options

So I ordered a winch (Superwinch EP9.0, to be exact.) Now I need to think about how I want to wire it up. I should have some kind of cut-out system, either something rather manual, like an Anderson PowerPole connector, or something more geeky like a switch-activate solenoid. I know Warn sells a cut-out kit using a solenoid. No clue as to how reliable or long-lasting it is. I also thought about using a Hella ignition/battery kill switch, rally car-style, under the hood. An in-cab option just seems way cooler.

What do you guys use?

:iagree: I have mine mounted inside my bumper and the controls are under the hood. I never used a cut out and have never had a problem.

Not to say in the wrong place and the right time, you wouldn't have a problem. :pROFSheriffHL:

I have taken the risk and so far have been OK.

Forgive my noobiness, but what does the cutout do?

It prevents someone from connecting a remote or using a paperclip to activate the winch for evil purposes. They have to deactivate the cutout before they can run the winch (either flip a switch in the cab or reconnect the power cables under the hood.)

Highly suggest reviewing the peak current demands your winch can make b4 deciding on a switch. 400 amps is not uncommon, and while that's short duration, it's not a spike either.

A sometimes easier solution is to move the relay assembly to under the hood.

The EP9.0's spec sheet says it maxes out around 350 amperes. West Marine carries some Blue Sea fuse holders that can handle that easily enough. It just seems excessive to have to pay $30 for a fuse...

I mounted the solenoid pack underhood, which should provide as much security as an underhood cutout device. Either way, the perp would have to force the hood open and then everything is pretty much fair game.
