XT17 short film

Warn Industries

Supporting Vendor

Clay Croft, rider and owner of Hiline Productions, made this video of the WARN XT17 Portable Winch in use. This pretty much sums up the questions about why you might want one.

Perhaps a better investment of monies would have been to choose a more appropriate motorcycle for the trail along with some tires more suited for the conditions. It's no wonder he got stuck in that simple little rock garden....he was riding on street-biased tires. Also, the part where he has to winch himself off the side of the road....that was the flattest section of the trail.

This video seems more appropriate in the vendor's forum.

For those new to motorcycling, this video is simply jazzy marketing, IMO. Don't fly towards the light.

awesome marketing,,, takes the "go prepared" motto at the end of the video to new heights. the bike has no gear and the rider appears to wear no pack, i guess the winch will also build a shelter, filter creek water, splint a broken leg and signal for help, should the situation arise.

all joking aside, i can see the real use of such a winch on a round the world type trip with a very heavy loaded bike where you would encounter some difficult terrain for lack of any other route.

Wow, tough crowd.

+1. Its a marketing video, not a movie of someone actually out by themselves. To rip him on his choice of tires or lack of survival gear is silly. What's next, complaining that automotive commercials don't represent reality because most people never get to drive on a road closed off just for them?

I could see it being of use to get you unstuck from a sticky situation. Even the best equipped bikes with highly skilled riders get stuck once in a while.

Last summer I got stuck in a mud patch (I seem to miss the don't do it filter) after 2 hours of sweating and being eaten by bugs I finally got the ***** out. All the while thinking this fringen thing should have a winch...

While it is snazzy marketing, I could see it coming in handy...had a bud loose his KTM 300 off a side hill down 300' in Taylor Park (I think it was on Double Top IIRC)....man getting that thing back up the hill (only way to go) was a royal pain in the ********! Had to ride back to camp and get come-a-longs and rope. Took us better part of the next day to retrieve it.

Can't really tell how steep it is here (maybe you can as the trail is right on the edge)...but you don't want to loose it here...and he did. If you look up the trail you'l see people standing making sure no one looses it on a off camber rock out cropping, covered with rollie pollies....

I could see how a moto-winch would come in handy...and since we usually carry chainsaws in the spring clearing blow downs, have one of the guys carry this attachment for the saw, wouldn't have worry about keeping the bike running to operate the winch or killing the battery.

Of course the more weight you carry usually sucks...and we usually just man handle stuck bikes, and blow downs.
